A wedding at Villa Monastero, Varenna

Villa Monastero hosts symbolic ceremonies on its lakeside loggia, with prices and rules published in full by its owner, the Provincia di Lecco. Here is what they say, what they mean for photo and film, and how I would plan the light.

A Villa Monastero wedding is a small, focused affair: a symbolic ceremony on a loggia over the water, then a garden that runs about two kilometres along the shore south of Varenna. Its owner, the Provincia di Lecco, publishes prices, guest limits and rules, which is rare on the lake; this guide puts them together, checked in October 2026. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa Monastero, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.

What Villa Monastero is

The villa grew out of a Cistercian convent for women, founded at the end of the 12th century. The Mornico family from Valsassina owned it for more than three centuries, Walter Kees rebuilt it between 1897 and 1909, and the De Marchi family of Milan, who bought it in 1925, gave it away in 1939 so that it would become public. The Provincia di Lecco bought the estate in 2009. In its Sala Fermi, Enrico Fermi gave his last lectures in 1954.

Today it is a house museum (the Casa Museo), a botanical garden laid out in terraces along the lake, and a conference centre.

Ceremony spaces and guest numbers

The Provincia's own sources give slightly different limits, so check the current one when you book:

Space Online booking, up to 30 guests Brochure figure
Loggia on the lake 25 30
Neoclassical temple 6 8
Sala Polvani, in the Casa Museo 24 not listed
Tensile structure in the garden 30 70
Sala Fermi not listed 80

Ceremonies for up to 30 people are booked online. For more, write to villa.monastero@provincia.lecco.it at least three weeks ahead. The tensile structure serves either the ceremony or the reception that follows, not both.

What a ceremony costs

The published rate is €3,500 including VAT within opening hours. It covers one hour of exclusive use of the loggia and up to three hours, not exclusive, in the garden for setting up, clearing and photographs, plus chairs, a golf cart if needed and entry to the Casa Museo and gardens. Two hours of the loggia cost €4,200, and each hour before or after public opening adds €300. Cancelling within 60 days costs the full amount; earlier, half.

For a reception under the garden structure, the 2026 rates are €300 for setting up and €200 an hour from 9 am to 7 pm, or €350 an hour outside those times. Catering is exclusive to King Gestioni Alberghiere (the group that runs Villa Cipressi): eventivm@rcollectionhotels.com. Receptions must end by 11 pm.

Can you legally marry at Villa Monastero?

No. The Provincia states that only symbolic ceremonies are possible. The Comune di Varenna's wedding portal offers civil ceremonies at the town hall and at Villa Cipressi next door; for non-residents the Comune charges €1,200 on weekdays and €1,500 at weekends, March to November, before 5.30 pm. A civil ceremony in the morning and the loggia in the afternoon fits easily into one day. My free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers.

Rules that affect photography and film

  • Private use only. Photographs and film may be taken "solely for private use", and the villa's FAQ allows publication only on your own personal social media. I would therefore not publish your photographs from the villa on my website or social pages without the Provincia's consent.
  • Drones need the Provincia di Lecco's authorisation, with the pilot's d-flight registration, insurance and, from 250 g, licence.
  • Inside the Casa Museo flash is not allowed.
  • Balustrades and statues: the visitor rules forbid touching, sitting or leaning on them, in the garden and in the house, so I plan portraits standing, not perched on the stone.
  • During ceremonies: music only at low volume, no fireworks, no food or drink brought in, and no access to the stairs down to the lake. Flowers must not damage the building: no hooks or glue.
  • Vehicles may not enter without authorisation, and suppliers' vans have a maximum size of 3.60 × 1.50 × 1.80 m.
  • Suppliers: the villa does not suggest photographers or other suppliers, and does not arrange flowers, music, a celebrant or transport.

A separate session, such as the day after, costs €300 an hour in the shared garden, or €1,000 to €1,300 an hour for exclusive use of the loggia, temple or Glorietta terrace, for the two of you and up to four crew (two on the Glorietta). Book 14 days ahead.

Opening hours and visitors

You will share the garden with visitors. In 2026 it is open every day from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm in April, May and September, to 8 pm from June to August, and from 10 am to 6 pm in October, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Some areas are closed for works; ask which paths are open. There are 12 guest rooms on site, four single and eight double.

Getting there: boats, trains and parking

  • By boat: small boats can land free at the villa's own landing (6.30 × 2.70 m) to drop off and collect, without staying moored; request it when you book. From Varenna's main landing it is about 15 minutes on foot.
  • By ferry: Varenna to Bellagio or Menaggio takes about 15 minutes.
  • By train: Varenna-Esino station, on the line from Milan through Lecco, is within a kilometre.
  • By car: the multi-storey opposite Villa Cipressi costs €3 an hour (€2 after the first two hours) or €25 a day, with free spaces along Viale Polvani. Coaches and minibuses may not enter Varenna's historic centre, Viale Polvani included, without authorisation.

Light: when to plan portraits

The garden faces west. By my calculation from the terrain, the sun reaches it only at about 9 am in June, then stays until about 8.10 pm in mid-May and 8.30 pm in mid-June, when it sets into the low valley behind Menaggio. In mid-September it drops behind the western mountains at about 6.30 pm, in mid-October about 6 pm.

That has a practical side. In September the whole golden hour falls inside opening hours. In June the last half hour of sun comes after the 8 pm closing, at €300 an hour, or from a boat just off the shore.

Rain plan

No rain plan is published. The covered options are the Sala Polvani, the Sala Fermi and the tensile structure, the only place besides the café where food and drink are allowed. Ask which one is held for you.

A suggested Villa Monastero wedding day (June)

  1. 11.00 am Civil ceremony at Varenna town hall, if you want it.
  2. 4.30 pm Arrival by boat at the villa's landing; setting up begins.
  3. 5.30 pm Symbolic ceremony on the loggia, your hour of exclusive use.
  4. 6.30 pm Aperitivo under the garden structure; family photos.
  5. 7.15 pm Portraits through the terraced garden as the light warms.
  6. 8.00 pm By boat to dinner, with the last sun on the water.

Photographing and filming a Villa Monastero wedding: my plan

I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, quietly and with no crew. With 30 guests or fewer that is all a day like this needs. Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we build the timeline around the light, choose photo spots and agree the rain plan.

Here the rules shape the timeline: one hour on the loggia, three in the garden, visitors around, and closing time. I would plan it to the minute, garden route included. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding.

FAQ

Can you get legally married at Villa Monastero?

No. Villa Monastero hosts symbolic ceremonies only. The legal ceremony can take place on the same day through the Comune di Varenna, at the town hall or at Villa Cipressi next door, from €1,200 for non-residents on a weekday between March and November.

How much does a wedding at Villa Monastero cost?

The published ceremony rate is €3,500 including VAT: one hour of exclusive use of the loggia, up to three hours in the garden, chairs and entry. Two hours cost €4,200, and each hour outside opening times adds €300. A reception structure costs €300 to set up plus €200 an hour by day.

How many guests can a Villa Monastero ceremony have?

Up to 30 through online booking, with the loggia listed for 25 to 30 guests. The brochure gives 70 for the tensile structure and 80 for the Sala Fermi. For more than 30 guests, email the Provincia at least three weeks ahead.

Can we have Villa Monastero to ourselves?

No. The villa cannot be rented for exclusive use because it stays open to visitors, and other events may run the same day. Your hour on the loggia is yours alone; the garden is shared.

Can our photographer publish the photos from Villa Monastero?

The villa allows photographs and film for private use only, and publication on your own personal social media. A photographer's portfolio is not private use, so I would ask the Provincia's consent first. Your own gallery and film are unaffected.

Can you fly a drone at Villa Monastero?

Only with the Provincia di Lecco's authorisation. The pilot sends a self-declaration with d-flight registration and insurance details, plus a licence for drones of 250 g or more. As a registered EU drone pilot, I can prepare this, then check the d-flight map for the day.
