A wedding at Villa Balbiano, Ossuccio
Villa Balbiano is a private villa on Lake Como, rented exclusively, where a legal civil ceremony is possible through the Comune di Tremezzina. Here is what is published, what is not, and how I would plan the light and the logistics.
A Villa Balbiano wedding means having a whole historic villa to yourselves: its suites, its Italian garden, its private pier on the western shore of Lake Como. It is also one of the places where the Comune di Tremezzina celebrates legal civil weddings. Much else, from capacity to price, is quoted only on request, so this guide sets out what the operator and the Comune publish, checked in October 2026, and the questions to ask. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa Balbiano, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.
What Villa Balbiano is
According to the Comune di Tremezzina, the estate first belonged to the Giovio family. Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, for whom Villa d'Este at Cernobbio had been designed in 1568, acquired it in 1597, and it passed in 1637 to the abbot Marco Gallio; Giacomo Gallio completed it, with stucco by Agostino Silva and frescoes by the Recchi painters in the great hall. In 1787 Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini bought it, and between 1790 and 1793 he bought the whole Lavedo peninsula nearby, where he created Villa del Balbianello.
The villa today: garden, suites and pier
The villa is run for private rental by The Heritage Collection, a family-run group founded in 2011. The operator describes grounds of over two hectares with a large Italian garden, an outdoor swimming pool, a private pier and a boathouse, and six suites in the main palazzo. It markets the villa for destination weddings, elopements and pre-wedding shoots, and offers its own event planning service.
What it does not publish: guest capacities for the ceremony and dinner, which spaces are used for each, the rental fee, minimum stay, or catering rules. Ask for all of it in writing before you plan around a number.

Can you legally marry at Villa Balbiano?
Yes. The Comune di Tremezzina's own page for the villa calls it a "location per matrimoni", and its civil wedding fee table lists Villa Balbiano. For non-residents the Comune charges €1,800 in office hours (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, 9 am to noon) and €2,200 outside them in 2026, and €2,000 and €2,400 from 1 January 2027 (residents €600), on top of the villa's own fee. Apply to the civil status office at least 30 days ahead; there are no ceremonies on 1 and 6 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 1 November, 8, 25 and 26 December, or the patron saint's day.
The same table lists two more places in Ossuccio: the portico of Santa Maria Maddalena (€1,000 in office hours for non-residents) and the Isola Comacina (€2,500), for couples who want the legal part somewhere else. My free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers by nationality.

Events and the Comune: what to ask
In April 2024 the Comune di Tremezzina adopted a policy on occasional events at the historic villas in its territory. Its full text is not on the Comune's website. Before you sign, ask the operator in writing what applies to your date: the music end time, the number of guests, and whether guests should arrive by road or by water.
Getting there: boats, roads and airports
- By boat: the villa has its own private pier. There is no public boat landing at Ossuccio; the nearest Navigazione Laghi stops are Sala Comacina, Isola Comacina, Campo and Lenno. For guests staying around the lake, chartered boats to the pier are the most comfortable arrival.
- By road: along the lakeside road through Tremezzina. By my routing estimate it is about 75 km from central Milan, roughly 1 hour 15 without traffic, and longer on summer weekends.
- Airports: by the same estimate, about 1 hour 20 from Milan Malpensa, 1 hour 30 from Linate and 1 hour 40 from Bergamo Orio al Serio.
- Parking: not published; ask the operator how guests' cars and shuttles are handled.
Photo, film and drone rules
The operator publishes no rules on photography, flash, drones, confetti or music. Because the villa is rented exclusively, the questions are practical: which rooms and frescoed spaces may be used for portraits, the time the music must stop, and whether a drone flight is welcome. As a registered EU drone pilot I check the d-flight map for the day and never fly over guests gathered together.
Light: when to plan portraits
Ossuccio faces the lake from the western shore, with mountains rising behind. By my calculation from the terrain, the sun goes behind them at about 7.05 pm in mid-May, 7.20 pm from mid-June to mid-July, 6.30 pm in mid-September and 5.55 pm in mid-October, two hours before sunset in June (about 9.15 pm). Mornings are bright from about 6.10 am in June.
That shapes the day. The garden is in soft, even shade from early evening while the far shore and the sky still glow, which is lovely for portraits and for a white dress. For a last touch of direct sun, a boat heading out from the pier towards open water meets the light again for a while.

Rain plan
None is published. Ask which interior spaces can hold the ceremony and the dinner for your numbers, and where a marquee could stand. Lake Como is wetter than Turin in every month, so set a deadline for the decision.
A suggested Villa Balbiano wedding day (June)
- Friday Guests arrive; welcome drinks by the pier.
- Saturday, 10.00 am Civil ceremony for close family, in office hours.
- 1.00 pm Lunch, then rest; getting ready in the suites.
- 5.30 pm Symbolic ceremony in the garden for all guests.
- 6.15 pm Aperitivo; family photos.
- 7.00 pm Portraits in the garden as the light softens.
- 8.00 pm Ten minutes on a boat from the pier, then dinner.
Or keep it simple: one civil ceremony in the late afternoon, outside office hours, and the whole evening at the villa.
Photographing and filming a Villa Balbiano wedding: my plan
I photograph and film the day myself, so one quiet person follows the story instead of a crew. Before the wedding we build the timeline together around the light, the photo spots and the rain plan (a consultation that comes with every collection), and I work directly with your planner.
An exclusive villa wedding often runs over two or three days. I would cover the parts that matter to you, not every hour: perhaps the welcome evening, then the wedding day from getting ready in the suites to the first dance. With more than about 100 guests, a second photographer or videographer helps. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding.
FAQ
Can you legally get married at Villa Balbiano?
Yes. The Comune di Tremezzina lists Villa Balbiano as a place for civil weddings. For non-residents its fee is €1,800 in office hours (weekdays 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday 9 am to noon) and €2,200 outside them in 2026, €2,000 and €2,400 from 2027, on top of the villa's own rental.
How much does a Villa Balbiano wedding cost?
The operator does not publish prices, and the Comune's page for the villa simply says to contact it. Ask what the rental includes: nights, suites, garden, staff and catering. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your dates, with travel quoted separately and multi-day coverage quoted to your plan; write to me.
How many guests can Villa Balbiano host?
No capacity is published by the operator. Ask for the ceremony, aperitivo and dinner capacities separately, indoors and out, since the indoor numbers are what matter in rain. The villa sleeps guests in six suites in the main palazzo; the rest will stay around Tremezzina.
How do guests reach Villa Balbiano?
By road along the lakeside through Tremezzina, or by boat to the villa's private pier. There is no public boat stop at Ossuccio; the nearest are Sala Comacina, Isola Comacina, Campo and Lenno. Chartered boats from guests' hotels are often the easiest arrival.
When is the best light for photos at Villa Balbiano?
The early evening. By my calculation the sun goes behind the mountains at about 7.20 pm in June and 6.30 pm in mid-September, leaving the garden in soft shade while the far shore glows. A short boat trip from the pier catches the last direct light.
