A wedding at Villa Pizzo, Cernobbio
Villa Pizzo hosts symbolic ceremonies at its 19th-century boat basin and dinners in its courtyard, from May to October, while the legal ceremony happens at the Comune di Cernobbio. Here is what is published and how I would plan the light.
A Villa Pizzo wedding begins at the water's edge, at a large 19th-century darsena, a boat basin ringed by original statues, which the villa offers as the place for the "yes". Halfway between Cernobbio and Moltrasio, the villa and its buildings are fully visible only from the lake, as its own history page notes. This guide gathers what the villa and the Comune di Cernobbio publish, checked in October 2026, and what to ask. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa Pizzo, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.
What Villa Pizzo is
The story begins in 1435, when Giovanni Mugiasca, a merchant from Como, bought land at Pizzo; the villa was built before 1569. In 1842 it was left to Como's Sant'Anna hospital, from which Archduke Ranieri of Habsburg bought it. Elise Musard followed, and painted it pink, and in 1871 the Milanese Volpi-Bassani family bought it. The garden holds what the villa calls the very first monument to Alessandro Volta.
Spaces for the ceremony and reception
The villa describes three settings. The ceremony takes place at the darsena, surrounded by original statues. Cocktails are served in large neoclassical rooms with fine frescoes. Dinner is in the courtyard around the villa.
The park runs lengthwise between terraces on the hillside and the lake, with cypress avenues, a gallery of clipped yews and an Italian garden with baroque fountains. One part is called the Zona Genova, for its south-facing exposure.
The villa publishes no capacities. The Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane, which lists the villa, gives 160 seats for outdoor weddings; confirm the number for your layout. Exclusive use and overnight stays are not mentioned on the villa's site, so ask.
Can you legally marry at Villa Pizzo?
No. The Comune di Cernobbio's wedding rules, amended on 25 June 2026, allow civil weddings in two places only: the Sala Stemmi in the town hall and Villa Bernasconi, the Comune's Liberty-style villa museum. A ceremony at Villa Pizzo is symbolic.
The Comune's slots are Monday to Friday at 10 am, 11.30 am and 1 pm, Saturday at 10 am and 11.30 am, and Thursday also at 3.30 pm and 5 pm; other times until 6 pm cost more, with none on Sundays or public holidays. For non-residents the Sala Stemmi costs €500 and Villa Bernasconi €1,200. Apply at least 30 days ahead. My free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers by nationality.

Getting there: road, boats and airports
- By road: on Via Regina, the lakeside road north of Cernobbio towards Moltrasio. Ask the villa how guests' cars are handled; for its guided visits, parking inside the park is available on request.
- By boat: there is no public stop at the villa. The nearest Navigazione Laghi landings are Cernobbio and Moltrasio. The historic houses association describes two docks, an old one facing the Villa d'Este basin and a newer one facing Moltrasio; ask whether boats can land guests there.
- Airports: by my routing estimate, about 55 minutes from Milan Malpensa, an hour from Linate and 1 hour 15 from Bergamo Orio al Serio, without traffic.
Photo, film, music and fireworks
The villa publishes no rules on photography, flash, drones or music. It runs photo and film shoots as a separate service, with its own contact (info@villapizzo.com, +39 366 350 4907), which is the line for a session on another day. For your wedding, ask which parts of the park are open for portraits and at what times, and whether a drone may fly. I also check the d-flight map: seaplanes fly from Como, a few kilometres south.
Fireworks are regulated by the Comune di Cernobbio for the whole town. For private events such as weddings, a display may last at most seven minutes; in June, July and August it may run from 9 pm to 10.30 pm Sunday to Thursday, and from 9.30 pm to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday, and until 10 pm in other months. Apply at least 30 days before; fireworks louder than 120 decibels are not allowed.
Light: when to plan portraits
The shore here faces east-southeast, with the hill behind. By my calculation from the terrain, the sun goes behind it at about 7.25 pm in mid-May, 7.45 pm from mid-June to mid-July, 6.50 pm in mid-September and 6.10 pm in mid-October, long before sunset (about 9.15 pm in June). The far shore and the sky keep the light after the garden loses it.
So I would plan the portraits for the hour before the sun leaves, along the cypress avenues and the yew gallery, and then the soft shade after it for the darsena, where the statues and the still water need no help. On a garden this long, the route between spots matters as much as the spots.

Rain plan
None is published. The frescoed rooms used for cocktails are the obvious covered space; ask how many guests they hold for a ceremony or a dinner, and where a marquee could go. Lake Como is wetter than Turin in every month, so agree the deadline for the call.
A suggested Villa Pizzo wedding day (June)
- 11.30 am Civil ceremony at the Sala Stemmi in Cernobbio.
- 2.00 pm Getting ready at your hotel.
- 5.30 pm Symbolic ceremony at the darsena.
- 6.15 pm Cocktails in the frescoed rooms; family photos.
- 6.45 pm Portraits along the cypress avenues while the sun is still on them.
- 8.15 pm Dinner in the courtyard.
- 9.30 pm Fireworks, if you want them and the Comune approves (Friday or Saturday).
Photographing and filming a Villa Pizzo wedding: my plan
I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, documentary first. In the pre-wedding consultation that comes with every collection we plan the day around the light, pick the spots and agree the rain plan, and I work directly with planners.
At Villa Pizzo I would plan the walk: from the darsena to the frescoed rooms to the courtyard, so guests and the two of you move with the light rather than against it. A villa seen best from the lake also deserves a few minutes on a boat, if the docks allow it. With more than about 100 guests, a second photographer or videographer helps. FAQ
Can you get legally married at Villa Pizzo?
No. Cernobbio celebrates civil weddings only in the Sala Stemmi of the town hall and at Villa Bernasconi. Couples marry legally there, often the same morning, then hold a symbolic ceremony at the villa's darsena. For non-residents the Comune charges €500 for the Sala Stemmi and €1,200 for Villa Bernasconi in standard slots.
How many guests can Villa Pizzo host?
The villa does not publish a number. The Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane lists 160 seats for outdoor weddings. Ask the villa for the ceremony, cocktail and dinner capacities separately, and for the indoor figure, which is the one that counts in rain.
When can you get married at Villa Pizzo?
The villa hosts weddings from May to October. Within that season, June gives the longest evenings, and September the softest light; for the legal part, remember that Cernobbio holds no civil ceremonies on Sundays or public holidays.
Can we have fireworks at a Villa Pizzo wedding?
The Comune di Cernobbio allows wedding displays of up to seven minutes, applied for at least 30 days ahead. In summer they may run from 9 pm to 10.30 pm Sunday to Thursday, and 9.30 pm to 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays; in other months until 10 pm.
How much does a Villa Pizzo wedding cost?
The villa does not publish prices; write to wedding@villapizzo.com. Ask what the hire includes: hours, spaces, the catering by AFM Banqueting, and any charge for boats at the docks. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date, with travel quoted separately; write to me.
