A Villa Rufolo wedding? Photos yes, ceremonies no

Villa Rufolo does not host wedding ceremonies or receptions. It does sell a photo and video ticket for weddings, and Ravello's own ceremony sites are a short walk away. Here is how to plan around that.

If you searched for a Villa Rufolo wedding, here is the most useful sentence on this page, in the villa's own words: "Villa Rufolo does not host ceremonies, weddings and the like, nor does it have a restaurant service." What it does allow is a wedding photo and film session in its gardens, with a special ticket. I have not photographed at Villa Rufolo, so this guide is built from what the villa, the Fondazione Ravello and the Comune di Ravello publish, checked in October 2026, plus how I would plan the day.

What Villa Rufolo is

The villa began as the 13th-century palace of Nicola Rufolo. In 1851 Francis Nevile Reid bought it from the d'Afflitto marquises. In May 1880 Richard Wagner came, and the line the villa still quotes is his: "Klingsor's magic garden is found."

The provincial tourist board bought it in 1974, and since 2007 the Fondazione Ravello has managed it; the property is shared between the Regione Campania and the Ministry of Culture. Every summer it is home to the Ravello Festival (in 2026, from early July to early September), when opening hours can change.

Can you get married at Villa Rufolo?

No. The villa rents some spaces for other private events, under a regulation with its own tariffs, but its events page rules out weddings and similar ceremonies, and it has no restaurant service. So there is no ceremony, aperitivo or dinner to book there.

What couples do instead is hold the ceremony elsewhere in Ravello and come to the villa for photographs:

  • Civil ceremony: the Comune di Ravello celebrates only at Palazzo Tolla and the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte. Couples who do not live in Ravello pay €650 from Monday to Thursday and €850 from Friday to Sunday and on holidays.
  • Fixed slots: from May to August at 11 am, 12.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 5 pm and 6.30 pm; from September to April at 11 am, 12.30 pm, 3 pm, 4.30 pm and 6 pm. Some dates are excluded, including 26 and 27 July and 15 August.
  • Comune rules: no confetti, acoustic music only, and a rain room for up to 40 guests.
  • Catholic wedding: the Comune points couples to the cathedral complex in Ravello; confirm with the parish.
  • Symbolic and other ceremonies: Villa Cimbrone, ten minutes away on foot, hosts symbolic, Protestant, Waldensian and Jewish ceremonies; see my Villa Cimbrone guide.

Wedding photos at Villa Rufolo: the rules

The villa's visitor regulation lists a separate ticket "for non-commercial photo and film services (weddings etc.)". The price is not published, and tickets are sold on site only, with no booking. The same regulation forbids:

  • commercial filming and photography;
  • bringing in professional photo and film equipment, and supports such as drones, tripods and stands;
  • fireworks and fires;
  • suitcases, trolleys and bulky bags.

Any exception needs a written, motivated request to the villa's management, made at least 24 hours ahead; the management decides and can set conditions. For a wedding session, I would send that request well before the day, describing the cameras, the people and the time, and keep the reply with us. The rules even forbid publishing photos of the villa labelled as somewhere else, which is one rule I follow everywhere.

Getting there

  • From Naples airport (Capodichino): the Comune's 2023 taxi tariffs list €150 to €170 to Ravello.
  • By sea: hydrofoils from Salerno to Amalfi, then 7 km up to Ravello; the Comune lists €55 for a taxi from Amalfi (1 to 4 people).
  • By car from Naples: the villa's fastest route is the motorway exit Angri Sud, then the Valico di Chiunzi pass.
  • The coast road: on busy days in season, ANAS applies alternate number plates on the Amalfi Coast road (SS163), with exemptions for hotel guests on arrival and departure, taxis and private hire.

Inside Ravello, everything in this plan is within walking distance, which is half its charm.

Light and the best portrait spots

The gardens and terraces look out over the Gulf of Salerno to the south. By my reading of the map, the sun sets behind the hills to the west, so the terraces fall into shade before sunset. In Ravello the sun sets around 8.10 pm in mid May, 8.35 pm in late June and 7.10 pm in mid September, and from 28 September 2026 the villa closes at 7 pm (check the hours for your month).

  • The Belvedere: a colonnade and pergola with bougainvillea and climbing roses, and the gulf beyond. Best when the sun is low or the terrace is in shade.
  • The gardens: paths and flower beds, softer in the hour before closing.
  • The tower: the villa's Torre Museo, for a few frames with height.

In practice, the best window is the last two hours before closing, especially in spring and autumn when the sun is lower. Arrive before the 6.30 pm last entry.

A suggested Ravello day with Villa Rufolo photos

A September shape, using the Comune's afternoon slot.

  1. 11.00 am Getting ready at a hotel in Ravello.
  2. 3.00 pm Civil ceremony at Palazzo Tolla or the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte.
  3. 3.45 pm Family photos at the ceremony site, ten minutes, with a list.
  4. 4.30 pm Villa Rufolo: the couple and me only, with the photo ticket and written permission. About an hour in the gardens and on the Belvedere.
  5. 5.45 pm Aperitivo with your guests at your reception venue.
  6. 7.10 pm Ten minutes for the last light over the gulf.
  7. 8.00 pm Dinner, then the party, within your reception venue's end time.

How I would plan photo and film at Villa Rufolo

I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, which suits a place with strict equipment rules: one person, one discreet bag, no tripod. I would send the written request for permission well ahead, buy the tickets on the day, and plan an hour that respects the other visitors on the paths. If a quiet corner is busy, we wait; the light here changes slowly.

If it rains, keep the session flexible: the ticket is bought on the day, so moving it to the next morning at 9 am is easy, and an early garden often has the softest light.

Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we plan the light, the spots and the rain plan. For typical budgets, see my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy.

FAQ

Can you get married at Villa Rufolo?

No. The villa states that it does not host ceremonies, weddings and the like, and has no restaurant service. Ravello's civil weddings take place at Palazzo Tolla and the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte; Catholic weddings at the cathedral complex. You can then come to Villa Rufolo for photographs, with the photo ticket.

Can we take wedding photos at Villa Rufolo?

Yes. The villa's regulation has a separate photo and video ticket for non-commercial shoots such as weddings. Professional equipment, tripods and drones need written permission from the villa's management, requested at least 24 hours ahead. Tickets are sold on site only; from 28 September 2026 the gardens close at 7 pm.

How much does a Villa Rufolo wedding photo session cost?

The villa does not publish the price of its photo and video ticket, so ask at the ticket office or by email. The standard entry ticket is €8 (2026). Your civil ceremony at a Comune site costs €650 or €850 for non-residents. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date; write to me.

Can we have our reception at Villa Rufolo?

No. The villa rules out weddings and has no restaurant service. Hold your aperitivo and dinner at a hotel or villa in Ravello that hosts events, and plan the Villa Rufolo session in the afternoon before it, when the gardens are open.

Can you fly a drone at Villa Rufolo?

Not without written permission. The villa's regulation bans bringing in drones, along with tripods and professional equipment, unless the management authorises it. I am a registered EU drone pilot, but here I would only plan aerials if the villa agreed in writing and the airspace allowed it.

When is the best light at Villa Rufolo?

The last two hours before closing (7 pm from 28 September 2026), when the sun is lower and the terraces start to fall into shade. In spring and autumn this window is especially kind. The 9 am opening is a calm alternative, before the gardens fill.
