A Villa Cortine wedding in Sirmione, Lake Garda

Villa Cortine is a five-star hotel in a five-hectare park in the old centre of Sirmione. Here is what it offers for a wedding, where a legal ceremony can happen, how guests arrive, and how I would plan the light.

If you are planning a Villa Cortine wedding, you have probably already fallen for the setting: a neoclassical villa with a colonnade, a park of old trees and fountains, and Lake Garda below. I have not worked at Villa Cortine yet, so I will not pretend otherwise: the photographs here are from my own work in Istanbul and on Lake Como. This guide puts together what the hotel and the Comune di Sirmione publish (checked in October 2026) with how I plan photo and film for a lake wedding.

What Villa Cortine is

In 1890, the hotel's history says, Count Kurt von Koseritz, a minister of the German Duchy of Anhalt, bought the whole hill, about five hectares, and between 1898 and 1900 he built the villa, partly for the lake climate his wife needed. The façade follows a strict neoclassical style, with large columns and Veronese marble brought across the lake on barges.

In 1926 the industrialist Giuseppe Donnagemma added the Neptune fountain on the driveway and new planting of palms, cypresses and cedars. In 1957 the villa was enlarged into today's hotel, and since 1987 it has belonged to the Ghidini family of Brescia.

Today it has 52 rooms and suites, split between the main building and the old villa, an outdoor pool, a tennis court and a private jetty of 500 square metres on the lake.

Which spaces host ceremonies and receptions

The hotel's events page says its park and lake views can host "ceremonies, welcome cocktails, receptions, or even just a special dinner", planned by its own team. It does not publish a list of event rooms with capacities, so ask for one in writing. These are the spaces the hotel itself describes:

Space What the hotel says about it Wedding use to ask about
The park Five hectares, century-old trees, statues, fountains, roses Ceremony, aperitivo, portraits
Le Gardenie terrace Restaurant terrace "overlooking the sunset on Lake Garda during the warmer months" Dinner
The Belvedere Candlelit private dinners with a lake view at sunset Very small dinner, portraits
Al Molo Grill & Bar Pergola restaurant on the 500 m² private jetty Aperitivo, informal dinner
Koseritz Bar & Bistrot In the halls of the old villa, facing the colonnade Drinks, rain plan

Exclusive use, minimum numbers and music hours are not published. Ask about all three before you sign: a hotel with other guests has to balance your party against their sleep.

Not on the evidence I could find. The Comune di Sirmione lists where its civil weddings can be held: Parco Tomelleri, Parco Callas, the Spiaggia delle Muse near the castle, Giardino Grazia Deledda, Piazzale Orti Manara by the Grottoes of Catullus, the Casa del Pescatore at Punta Grò, and Palazzo Callas in Piazza Carducci, the municipal residence. Villa Cortine is not on that list. The Comune also notes that Parco Callas was closed for weddings until the end of June 2026 for renovation.

So the usual plan is a short legal ceremony at one of the Comune's sites, then the celebration, and perhaps a symbolic ceremony, at the hotel. Ask the registry office (anagrafe@sirmionebs.it, +39 030 9909143) for dates, fees and paperwork, and check my free guide to getting married in Italy for documents by nationality.

Getting there: airports, the ZTL, trains and boats

  • Airports: Verona at 35 km, Bergamo at 85 km, Milan Linate at 120 km and Malpensa at 170 km, by the hotel's figures; the concierge books transfers.
  • By car: the historic centre is a limited traffic zone. With a reservation, you give your name at the local police point in front of the castle and drive through to the hotel, which has free parking. On some days the police close the road; the hotel then runs electric golf carts from a car park near the castle.
  • By train: Peschiera del Garda (from Verona) or Desenzano del Garda (from Milan), both on the Milan to Venice line, about 15 minutes by private transfer.
  • By boat: public ferries link Sirmione with towns around the lake.

For guests staying elsewhere, plan a shuttle: coaches park outside the centre.

Light and the best portrait spots

The terrace looks towards the sunset, so evenings are the best time for photographs. In Sirmione the sun sets around 8.40 pm in mid May, about 9.10 pm in late June, and around 7.30 pm in mid September. The last half hour before that is when skin, water and stone all soften together.

  • The park: big trees give open shade in the afternoon, when the sun is high.
  • The colonnade and fountains: strong lines and white columns for portraits, best when the sun is low or behind the building.
  • The jetty: wide open sky and water, lovely at sunset, harsh at noon.
  • The old town: lanes, the castle walls and the white rocks of the shore. In high season these are public places, so I would plan them for an early morning session the day after.

A suggested Villa Cortine wedding day

A June shape, built around the sunset. Standard check-in is from 3 pm, so book the getting-ready room from the night before.

  1. 1.00 pm Getting ready in the hotel: details, letters, the dress.
  2. 4.30 pm Legal ceremony at a Comune site in the old town, or a symbolic ceremony in the park.
  3. 5.30 pm Aperitivo in the park. Family photos under the trees, ten minutes, with a list.
  4. 6.45 pm Twenty minutes of couple portraits by the colonnade and fountains.
  5. 7.45 pm Dinner on the terrace.
  6. 8.50 pm Ten minutes away from the table for the sunset over the lake.
  7. 10.00 pm Cake, first dance and party, until the time the hotel sets.

Rules that affect photo and film

  • Drones: I am a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3), but open-category flights never pass over gatherings of people. I check the d-flight map and ask the hotel and the Comune before planning any aerials.
  • Music and noise: the hotel does not publish an end time for music. Ask, and write it into the contract.
  • Flash: no rule is published. Ask whether any rooms in the old villa have restrictions.

Weather plan

Keep an indoor plan for every outdoor moment: the halls of the old villa for the ceremony or aperitivo, and a covered dinner space held in reserve. Ask which room is your wet-weather plan, and its capacity, before you sign. In summer, shade matters too: a ceremony under the trees is kinder to guests (and to faces) than one in open sun.

How I would plan photo and film at Villa Cortine

I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, so nobody waits for "the video person". For Villa Cortine I would ask the hotel for a site plan and choose the ceremony spot by where the sun will be at your hour.

On a lake, the arrival and the sunset are the two moments that tell the story, so the timeline protects both. More on typical prices is in my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy, and you can see a full lake wedding in Daniel and Adekunbi's story in Bellagio.

FAQ

Can you get legally married at Villa Cortine?

The Comune di Sirmione's published list of civil wedding sites does not include Villa Cortine. It lists parks, gardens, a beach near the castle, the Casa del Pescatore and Palazzo Callas. The usual plan is the legal ceremony at one of these, then the celebration and perhaps a symbolic ceremony at the hotel.

How much does a wedding at Villa Cortine cost?

The hotel does not publish wedding prices, capacities or minimum spends. Everything is quoted on request, so ask for the venue fee, menus, rooms and any exclusivity separately. Civil ceremony fees are set by the Comune. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date, with travel added transparently; write to me.

How many guests can Villa Cortine host?

The hotel does not publish event capacities. It has 52 rooms and suites for overnight guests, a park of five hectares and several restaurant spaces, including a sunset terrace and a pergola on the private jetty. Ask for the seated and standing numbers of each space, and of the indoor rain plan, in writing.

How do guests reach Villa Cortine through the ZTL?

Hotel guests give their name at the local police point in front of the castle and drive through the limited traffic zone to the hotel's free car park. When the police close the road, the hotel runs electric golf carts from a car park near the castle. Other guests should come by shuttle or taxi.

Can you fly a drone at a Villa Cortine wedding?

Only if the rules allow it on the day. I am a registered EU drone pilot, but open-category flights cannot pass over gatherings of people, and Sirmione's centre is busy. I check the d-flight map for restrictions, ask the hotel, and plan aerials only over open water or empty park, away from guests.

When is the best light at Villa Cortine?

The evening. The hotel's terrace looks towards the sunset, which falls around 9.10 pm in late June and around 7.30 pm in mid September. I plan couple portraits in the hour before dinner and ten minutes at sunset. May, June and September give long, soft evenings without the strongest summer heat.
