A wedding at Villa Cipressi, Varenna

Villa Cipressi is one of the few villas on Lake Como where a legal civil ceremony can happen, through the Comune di Varenna. Here is what the Comune and the hotel publish, what they do not, and how I would plan the light.

A Villa Cipressi wedding has one clear advantage: the ceremony at the villa can be legally binding. The Comune di Varenna uses the villa as a municipal venue for civil weddings, and says it hosts dozens every year. Add terraces of cypresses stepping down to the water, a private jetty and evening light that lasts, and it is easy to see why couples choose it. This guide gathers what the Comune and the hotel publish, checked in October 2026. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa Cipressi, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.

What Villa Cipressi is

Villa Cipressi is a group of buildings and gardens reworked between the 15th and the 19th centuries. Its first core was built for the Serponti family, and in the early 19th century Carlo Innocenzo Isimbardi, director of the Milan Mint, set up a mint workshop here; the Andreossi family, owners from 1864, cared most for the park. In 1980 the people of Varenna bought the villa by public subscription. It belongs mainly to the Comune di Varenna and is run as a hotel by the R Collection group.

The garden is laid out in terraces lined with cypresses, falling to the lake, which was once the villa's main entrance.

Spaces for the ceremony and reception

The hotel describes three indoor rooms with 15th-century frescoes, large fireplaces and crystal chandeliers, three outdoor terraces, and gardens used for aperitivo and photographs. It offers a sound system, lighting for the outdoor spaces, boats landing at the private jetty and a multi-storey car park next door. The hotel's restaurants are at its sister hotel, the Royal Victoria, reached across the garden.

The hotel publishes no capacities and no bedroom count (the rooms are spread over three buildings), so ask for both with your guest numbers. The villa "can also be requested in total exclusivity", which on a Saturday in June is worth asking about early: the hotel's own list of 2026 garden closures includes many summer Saturdays.

Can you legally marry at Villa Cipressi?

Yes. The Comune di Varenna's wedding portal, Varenna Wedding, lists two places for civil ceremonies: the council room of the town hall in Piazza Venini, named after Giorgio La Pira, and Villa Cipressi, described as a "municipal venue for civil ceremony weddings". The villa's availability must be confirmed with the hotel directly before you book with the Comune.

The Comune's fees for couples who are not resident in Varenna:

Period Time Monday to Friday Weekends and holidays
March to November 9.30 am to 5.30 pm €1,200 €1,500
March to November 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm €2,000 €2,000
December to February 9 am to 6 pm €800 €1,000

The Comune also lists €250 for foreign applicants not resident in Italy. These fees cover the paperwork; the villa adds its own charge. Be on time: the Comune charges €100 to €300 for late arrival, and after 60 minutes the ceremony is cancelled without refund. There are no weddings on 1 January, Easter, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 1 November, or 24, 25 and 31 December. My free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers by nationality.

Getting there: trains, ferries and parking

  • By train: Varenna-Esino station, on the line from Milan through Lecco to Sondrio and Tirano, is within a kilometre of the villa. It is the easiest arrival for guests without a car.
  • By ferry: car ferries and boats cross from Varenna to Menaggio and Bellagio in about 15 minutes (some Bellagio runs take 30), and to Cadenabbia in about 30.
  • By private boat: boats can land at the villa's private jetty, arranged with the hotel.
  • By car: the multi-storey car park opposite the villa costs €3 an hour (€2 after the first two hours) or €25 a day; the station car park €2 an hour or €18 a day; some free spaces line Viale Polvani. The Comune's own traffic ordinance says the multi-storey is not big enough.
  • Coaches and minibuses: banned all year from the historic centre streets, Via IV Novembre included, unless authorised. Plan guest shuttles with the Comune.
  • Traffic: one-way, south to north, on 2026 weekends (Saturday 10 am to Sunday 7 pm) and every day from 20 June to 6 September.
  • Airports: by my routing estimate, Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio are each about 80 minutes by road, Malpensa about 1 hour 35.

Light: the best time for portraits in Varenna

Varenna faces west across the lake, with mountains rising straight behind it. Mornings stay in shade: by my calculation from the terrain, the sun clears the ridge above the villa only at about 8.10 am in June and 9.10 am in mid-September.

Evenings are the reward. In early summer the sun sets into the low valley behind Menaggio, so the light stays on the garden until about 8.15 pm in mid-May and 8.35 pm from mid-June to mid-July. Later in the year it drops behind the mountains of the western shore sooner: about 6.30 pm in mid-September and 6 pm in mid-October. I would plan portraits for the last hour of sun, backlit through the cypresses, then a few minutes on the water.

Photo, film and drone rules

The hotel publishes no rules for photography, flash, drones or confetti, and the garden is open to paying visitors from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm from April to September (10 am to 5 pm in October). Ask the hotel in writing which areas will be private during your ceremony and portraits, and whether a drone may fly. As a registered EU drone pilot I also check the d-flight map for the day, and I never fly over guests gathered together.

Rain plan

None is published. The three frescoed rooms are the natural indoor option; ask the hotel if your ceremony moves there in rain, and how many guests they seat. Lake Como is wetter than Turin in every month, so decide the deadline for the call in advance.

A suggested Villa Cipressi wedding day (June)

  1. 1.30 pm Getting ready at the villa or in Varenna.
  2. 5.00 pm Civil ceremony at the villa, inside the standard slot.
  3. 5.45 pm Aperitivo on the terraces; family photos.
  4. 7.30 pm Portraits through the cypresses as the light warms.
  5. 8.15 pm A short boat ride from the private jetty, if booked.
  6. 8.45 pm Dinner.

Photographing and filming a Villa Cipressi wedding: my plan

I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, watching more than directing. Every collection starts with a pre-wedding consultation: we set the timeline by the light, choose the photo spots and agree the rain plan, and I work directly with planners.

Villa Cipressi suits that way of working. A civil ceremony is short and close, so I stay at the edge and let the vows run. The terraces give height for the walk down to the lake, and the evening light gives time. With a bigger guest list I would add a second photographer or videographer. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding.

FAQ

Can you have a legal civil wedding at Villa Cipressi?

Yes. The Comune di Varenna's Varenna Wedding portal lists Villa Cipressi, with the town hall, as a place for civil ceremonies. Confirm the villa's availability with the hotel first, then book the ceremony with the Comune. The papers are the same as for any civil wedding in Italy.

How much does a civil ceremony at Villa Cipressi cost?

For non-residents, from March to November, the Comune charges €1,200 on weekdays and €1,500 at weekends until 5.30 pm, and €2,000 from 5.30 to 10.30 pm, plus €250 for foreign applicants not resident in Italy. The villa's own charge is extra and quoted on request. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date; write to me.

How many guests can Villa Cipressi host?

The hotel does not publish capacities, for the ceremony or for receptions, nor its number of bedrooms. It offers exclusive use on request, three frescoed indoor rooms and three terraces. Write to eventi@rcollectionhotels.com with your numbers before you plan around a figure.

How do guests get to Villa Cipressi?

By train to Varenna-Esino, within a kilometre of the villa; by ferry from Menaggio or Bellagio in about 15 minutes; or by car, with paid car parks nearby. Coaches and minibuses cannot enter the historic centre without authorisation, so plan shuttles with the Comune.

When is the best light for photos at Villa Cipressi?

The evening. Varenna faces west, so by my calculation the sun stays on the garden until about 8.35 pm in June and 6.30 pm in mid-September, while mornings stay in the mountain's shade. A ceremony at 5 pm in summer leaves the best light for portraits.
