A wedding at Villa del Balbianello, Lenno

Villa del Balbianello, owned by the FAI, hosts legal civil ceremonies and symbolic ones on its loggia, with dinners for up to 130 guests. Here is what the FAI and the Comune di Tremezzina publish, and how I would plan the light and the boats.

A Villa del Balbianello wedding happens at the tip of a wooded peninsula, on a loggia open to the lake on both sides, and nobody arrives by car. That one fact shapes the whole day. The villa belongs to the FAI, the Italian National Trust, which hosts civil and symbolic ceremonies and dinners for up to 130 guests. This guide gathers what the FAI and the Comune di Tremezzina publish, checked in October 2026. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Balbianello, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.

What Villa del Balbianello is

A Franciscan convent stood on the point from the 13th century. At the end of the 18th century Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini of Milan, who already owned Villa Balbiano nearby, transformed it and commissioned the panoramic loggia. Risorgimento families, the Porro Lambertenghi and the Arconati Visconti, the philanthropist Marie Peyrat and the American general Butler Ames followed. In 1974 the explorer and collector Guido Monzino bought it, and at his death in 1988 he left it to the FAI.

Spaces and capacities

The FAI publishes these figures for private events:

Space Use Capacity
Loggia Durini (60 m²) Ceremony 80 to 100 people, at most 60 seated
Lake terrace (240 m²) Dinner 130
Loggia Segrè (90 m², 170 m² with the outside) Dinner 75 inside, 100 inside and out
Camphor terrace (80 m²) Aperitivo buffet 100

The Loggia Durini, with a compass rose inlaid in its floor, is reached by stairs; the Loggia Segrè has no steps, which matters for older guests. There is no café on the property, the interiors are seen only on guided tours, and there are no bedrooms: guests sleep in Lenno and around Tremezzina.

Can you legally marry at Villa del Balbianello?

Yes. The FAI offers "civil or symbolic wedding ceremonies", and the Comune di Tremezzina lists Villa del Balbianello among its authorised places for civil weddings. For non-residents the Comune charges €1,800 in office hours and €2,200 outside them in 2026, and €2,000 and €2,400 from 1 January 2027 (residents €600), on top of the FAI's own fee. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, 9 am to noon. Apply to the civil status office at least 30 days ahead; there are no ceremonies on 1 and 6 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 1 November, 8, 25 and 26 December, or the patron saint's day.

A Saturday afternoon ceremony is therefore out of hours. My free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers by nationality.

Getting there: boats, the footpath and parking

  • By taxi boat: from the Lido di Lenno, about seven minutes across the water. The service is private, paid, booked in advance and not run by the FAI, which also accepts any other private taxi boat. For a wedding, book boats for all guests, with a schedule.
  • On foot: a 1 km footpath, uphill and partly gravel, takes about 25 minutes; a 2.5 km trail takes about 45. Neither suits pushchairs or guests who walk with difficulty, so think about shoes.
  • By car: not possible, except for visitors with disabilities, who can reach the ticket office at the road entrance with notice. Park at the paid Parcheggio Mercato in Via Comoedia, Lenno, or in Via Diaz and Via Silvio Pellico. The FAI warns of heavy traffic and scarce parking at weekends and in summer.
  • Public transport: Navigazione Laghi boats stop at Lenno, and buses run from Como; trains from Milan reach Como Lago.
  • Airports: by my routing estimate to Lenno, about 1 hour 20 from Milan Malpensa and 1 hour 30 from Linate without traffic; allow longer in summer.

Photo, film and drone rules

The FAI states that photo shoots, weddings included, are paid and must be booked in advance, through its events contact (m.sormani@fondoambiente.it). It publishes no rules on drones, flash or tripods, so ask in writing with your booking: what the photography fee covers, which parts of the garden are yours and when, and whether a drone may fly. As a registered EU drone pilot I also check the d-flight map, and never fly over guests gathered together.

The villa opens to the public by booking, in 2026 from 10 am to 6 pm from mid-March and to 5 pm in November. How private events fit around those hours is not published, so confirm your exact window.

Light: when to plan portraits

The Loggia Durini looks over the inlet of the Isola Comacina on one side and towards the Tremezzina on the other, with the mountains of the western shore behind. By my calculation from the terrain, the sun leaves the point at about 7.30 pm in mid-May, 7.40 pm from mid-June to mid-July, 6.40 pm in mid-September and 6 pm in mid-October, well before sunset (about 9.15 pm in June). Mornings are bright early, from about 6.15 am in June.

So in summer I would plan portraits from about 6.30 pm, in warm side light on the loggia, then use the soft hour after the sun goes for the garden paths and the water. The boat back to Lenno at dusk, looking back at the point, is a frame worth saving time for.

Rain plan

None is published. The Loggia Segrè, with an inside room, is the only covered space the FAI lists. Agree with the FAI where the ceremony moves in rain, and remember that rain also means wet boats and a wet footpath.

A suggested Villa del Balbianello wedding day (June)

  2. 4.30 pm Guests leave the Lido di Lenno by taxi boat.
  3. 5.00 pm You arrive by boat; I am on the jetty.
  4. 5.30 pm Civil ceremony on the Loggia Durini.
  5. 6.15 pm Aperitivo on the camphor terrace; family photos.
  6. 6.45 pm Portraits on the loggia and the point while the sun is still on them.
  7. 8.00 pm Dinner on the lake terrace or in the Loggia Segrè.
  8. Late Boats back to Lenno, at the time agreed with the FAI.

Photographing and filming a Villa del Balbianello wedding: my plan

I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, as a quiet documentary presence. Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we build the timeline around the light, choose photo spots and agree the rain plan, and I work directly with planners.

At Balbianello the plan is mostly logistics. I would arrive with the first boat, film the crossings, and keep a few minutes on the water for the two of you. On a loggia this size, guests stand close, so I stay at the edge and use longer lenses for the vows. With 80 guests or more, a second photographer or videographer covers the boats and the aperitivo while I am with you. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding.

FAQ

Can you legally get married at Villa del Balbianello?

Yes. The FAI hosts civil or symbolic ceremonies, and the Comune di Tremezzina lists the villa as an authorised place for civil weddings. For non-residents the Comune charges €1,800 in office hours (weekdays 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday 9 am to noon) and €2,200 outside them in 2026, €2,000 and €2,400 from 2027, on top of the FAI's own charges.

How many guests can Villa del Balbianello host?

The Loggia Durini holds 80 to 100 people for a ceremony, with at most 60 seated. Dinners reach 130 on the lake terrace, 75 in the Loggia Segrè (100 using its outside space), and the camphor terrace takes 100 for an aperitivo buffet. There are no bedrooms on site.

How do wedding guests get to Villa del Balbianello?

By taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno, about seven minutes, or on a 1 km uphill footpath of about 25 minutes. Cars cannot reach the villa, except for visitors with disabilities with notice. Book boats for everyone, with return times.

How much does a wedding at Villa del Balbianello cost?

The FAI does not publish its fees for ceremonies, dinners or photo shoots; they are quoted on request. The Comune's ceremony fee for non-residents is €1,800 to €2,200 in 2026 and €2,000 to €2,400 from 2027. Add taxi boats for all guests. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date, with travel quoted separately; write to me.

Can you take wedding photos at Villa del Balbianello without getting married there?

Yes, as a booked session. The FAI says photo shoots, weddings included, are paid and must be booked in advance (m.sormani@fondoambiente.it). Ask what the fee includes and at what time the garden is yours, since the villa is also open to visitors.

When is the best light at Villa del Balbianello?

By my calculation the sun leaves the point at about 7.40 pm in June and 6.40 pm in mid-September, long before sunset. Plan portraits for the hour before that, then use the soft light after for the garden and the boat back to Lenno.
