Lake Como proposal photographer: how it works, where to ask and when

We photograph and film proposals and engagement sessions on Lake Como. Here is how a surprise proposal with a hidden photographer works, which spots in Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzina and Como allow it and on what terms, when the light is best, and what happens after the yes.

Toghrul NabiUpdated 2026-10-05

A Lake Como proposal needs three things to go right: a spot without forty strangers in it, an hour when the light is kind, and a photographer nobody notices until the ring is out. We are the Toghrul Nabi team, photographers and filmmakers based in Turin, and we work on Lake Como as proposal photographers as well as for engagement sessions and weddings. On the lake we have photographed Ali and Zariyat's engagement session, Musa and Solmaz's engagement and Daniel and Adekunbi's wedding in Bellagio.

This is the plan we go through with the person proposing, with each spot's real rules and hours. Official sources are at the end, checked in October 2026.

How a surprise proposal shoot works

A proposal photographer has one job: be there without being noticed. This is how we plan it.

  1. You write to us alone. Tell us the date, the place you have in mind and whether your partner suspects anything. We reply within a day or two, and we can have a free 20-minute video call in English, Italian, Russian, Turkish or Azerbaijani.
  2. We choose two spots. The main one and a second nearby, for rain or for the day it is full of people.
  3. We fix a mark. The exact stone or railing where you stop, and the direction you both face. We need to see your partner's face; your back is fine.
  4. We agree a signal. Something natural, like taking off your sunglasses, that tells us you are about to kneel.
  5. You invent a cover story. A walk before dinner or a table booked nearby: something that explains nice clothes.
  6. We are there first. We wait at a distance with a long lens, looking like any other visitors with a camera. We do not wave.
  7. After the yes, we walk over, introduce ourselves and take relaxed portraits while you are both still shaking.

Because we plan photo and film on one timeline, the proposal can be filmed too, discreetly and from a distance.

On a small boat there is nowhere to hide. Either we photograph from the shore as you pass a point we agreed, or you propose on the jetty before you board and we join you afterwards for portraits.

The best proposal spots on Lake Como, town by town

The central lake, where Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo face each other, has most of the classic spots. Here is what each one really allows; for weddings in the same towns, see our Lake Como wedding page.

Bellagio

Punta Spartivento is the very tip of the village, where Lake Como divides into its three branches. Bellagio's tourist office calls it "une des meilleures vues du lac", one of the best views of the lake, and it is a public place, so a simple proposal there needs no booking. It is also on every visitor's list, so go early or on a weekday.

The gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio are one of the few places on the lake that write proposals into their rules. For a proposal, the photographer pays the photo fee in advance (€427 including VAT for the whole day, the photographer's ticket included) and gives your name at the ticket office; you each pay the €10 entrance. No area can be reserved, other visitors will be there, and decorations and drones are not allowed. In 2026 the gardens open daily from 10 am to 7 pm, with shorter hours from 12 October, and close for the season on 1 November.

Varenna

Villa Monastero, owned by the Provincia di Lecco, is the most organised place on the lake for a proposal: its page is titled "Servizi fotografici e proposte di matrimonio". The fee covers the two of you and the photographers:

  • Shared garden: €300 an hour including VAT, paid in advance and non-refundable; other visitors will be there.
  • Exclusive spaces: the loggia on the lake or the neoclassical temple at €1,000 an hour, the Glorietta terrace at €1,300.
  • Outside opening hours: €300 extra for every hour.
  • Rules: book at least 14 days ahead; no decorations, flower arrangements or music; no photos on the steps down to the lake.

The Provincia counted 219 proposals at the villa in 2025, up from 79 in 2024. If the yes later becomes a wedding here, note that the villa now hosts symbolic ceremonies only, as its booking page states; the legal part takes place at Varenna town hall or at Villa Cipressi.

Villa Cipressi belongs to the Comune di Varenna and is run as a hotel; its terraced garden is open to the public, so ask the hotel first. Varenna faces west and keeps the evening light longer than the opposite shore. More in our Villa Monastero guide.

Tremezzina: Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello

On the western shore, Villa del Balbianello stands on its wooded point at Lenno. The FAI, which runs it, states that photo shoots, weddings included, are paid and must be booked. Visits are booked too, from 10 am to 6 pm (last entry to the park 5 pm). You arrive on foot, 1 km uphill from Lenno, or by a paid taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno. Details are in our Villa del Balbianello guide.

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is open from 10 am to 7 pm until 18 October 2026 (last ticket 6 pm), then to 6 pm until 8 November. It publishes no rules for photo sessions or proposals, so write to its events office first. Balbianello is half an hour's walk away along the Greenway.

The western shore faces east: as a rule of thumb, lovely in the morning and in shade early in the evening.

Como

The funicular to Brunate, the village on the hill above the town, takes 7 minutes and runs from 6 am to midnight from Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, near the lake. The park of Villa Olmo is free and open from 7 am to 11 pm between 5 April and 30 September (to 8 pm in winter); the villa itself is closed for restoration. The park's rules forbid chairs and tables on the ground, events without the City's authorisation, glass bottles and drones. A simple proposal is fine; the prosecco waits for later.

On the water: ferries and private boats

A boat is the most private place on the lake. Public boats and car ferries cross between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia in 10 to 15 minutes; in the autumn 2026 timetable the last boats leave at around 8 pm on some routes and after 10 pm on others, and the summer timetable is different. Buy tickets ashore: on board there is a €1 surcharge. A small private boat with a skipper is usually booked through your hotel; Navigazione Laghi's charter boats carry 100 to 770 passengers, a party rather than a proposal. Toghrul Nabi, our founder and creative director, is a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3), but Villa Melzi and Villa Olmo ban drones and Villa Monastero needs the Provincia di Lecco's authorisation.

When to propose: light and seasons

We plan proposals in the last 90 minutes before sunset, or in the first hour after sunrise if you want the place to yourselves. The catch on Lake Como is that the villa gardens keep museum hours. These are the sunset times we calculated with NOAA's equations for Bellagio (15th of the month, 2027, flat horizon) next to the gardens' 2026 closing times:

Month Sunset Villa Melzi Villa Monastero Villa Carlotta Balbianello
May 8.48 pm 7 pm 7.30 pm 7 pm 6 pm
June 9.15 pm 7 pm 8 pm 7 pm 6 pm
July 9.10 pm 7 pm 8 pm 7 pm 6 pm
September 7.35 pm 7 pm 7.30 pm 7 pm 6 pm
October 6.37 pm 6.30 pm 6 pm 7 pm 6 pm

So in early summer every garden closes before the sun goes down. A sunset proposal in June belongs to a public place, a boat, or Villa Monastero after hours at the extra €300 an hour. In mid-September most of the last hour before sunset falls inside Villa Monastero's opening hours (the garden closes at 7.30 pm), and the lake is quieter than in July and August. Mountains also take the sun early on many shores, so we check the real light for your spot, not the clock.

After the yes: the engagement session

Right after the proposal we guide you calmly through a few relaxed portraits. A longer engagement photoshoot on Lake Como, the same day or another, is also the easiest way to get comfortable in front of a camera before a wedding.

Ali and Zariyat's engagement session moved between terraced gardens, the shoreline and a small balcony over the water, with a pizza shared on a stone wall in between (their page). We also photographed Musa and Solmaz's engagement on Lake Como; their pre-wedding session in Susa is on their page. What to wear and how long a session takes are in our engagement photoshoot guide, and more about proposals is on the proposals page.

A rain plan

We watch the forecast with you in the days before. If rain is likely, we move to the second spot or to a covered one: Villa Monastero's loggia can be booked on its own, and a hotel room or a restaurant terrace with a roof and a view works too. On a weekday, moving the proposal by a day is often simplest, so we keep that option open.

FAQ

Where is the best place to propose on Lake Como?

For privacy, a boat or a booked villa slot; for a free spot, Punta Spartivento at the tip of Bellagio, early in the morning. Villa Monastero in Varenna sells proposal slots from €300 an hour, and Villa Melzi in Bellagio provides for proposals with a day photo fee. Varenna keeps the evening light longest.

Can we propose in a villa garden on Lake Como?

Yes, on the villa's terms. Villa Monastero books proposals at least 14 days ahead, from €300 an hour in the shared garden. Villa Melzi asks the photographer to pay its photo fee in advance. The FAI says photo shoots at Villa del Balbianello are paid and booked. None of them allows decorations, and other visitors are usually present.

Can we decorate the spot with flowers or candles?

Usually not. Villa Monastero forbids decorations, flower arrangements and music; Villa Melzi forbids decorations of any kind; the park of Villa Olmo forbids chairs, tables and glass bottles. On public land, ask the comune before you set anything up. A beautiful view and a well-chosen hour need no props.

What time of day is best for a Lake Como proposal?

The last 90 minutes before sunset, or the first hour after sunrise. In mid-June the sun sets at about 9.15 pm at Bellagio, after every villa garden has closed, so choose a public place or a boat. In mid-September it sets at about 7.35 pm: Villa Monastero's garden is open until 7.30 pm, so most of the last hour before sunset falls inside its opening hours, while Villa Melzi closes at 7 pm.

Can you film the proposal as well?

Yes. We plan photo and film on one timeline, so the proposal can be photographed and filmed discreetly and from a distance, and the minutes after the yes become a short film as well.

How much does a proposal photographer on Lake Como cost?

We send our prices once we know your date and place; travel is quoted separately. Venue fees are separate too: Villa Monastero charges from €300 an hour, Villa Melzi €427 including VAT for a day of photography plus €10 per person, and Balbianello quotes on request.
