Wedding photographer in Piedmont: the Langhe, Monferrato, the Alps and Turin
Piedmont is home ground. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Turin, and the vineyard hills, the castles, the royal residences and the Alpine valleys are all within a morning's drive.
I'm Toghrul Nabi, a wedding photographer in Piedmont, based in Turin and working since 2018. I photograph and film weddings myself, on one timeline, and most of the region is within a morning's drive: the vineyard hills of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, the castles and royal residences around the city, the Alpine valleys to the west and the lakes to the north.
This page is what I would tell you over coffee if you were choosing where in Piedmont to marry: how the areas differ, which season gives which light, what kind of venues exist, how a civil ceremony works in a small village, and how your guests will get there.
Langhe, Roero and Monferrato: the wine hills
In 2014 UNESCO inscribed "The vineyard landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato" on the World Heritage List: 29 municipalities and 10,789 hectares in six areas, from the Barolo hills and the castle of Grinzane Cavour to the Barbaresco hills and Nizza Monferrato. On a wedding day that means rows of vines following every curve of the hills, villages on the ridges, and castles and towers above them.
The Langhe, around Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco, are the most famous: steep hills, hilltop villages and the great wine names. Roads are narrow and winding, so allow more time than the map suggests. The Roero, across the Tanaro river from the Langhe, is smaller and quieter, with woods between the vineyards. Monferrato, between Asti, Casale and Alessandria, is broader and gentler, with castles and country houses spread across open hills.
For photographs, the hills give you something rare: long views at the hour when the light is low. A short drive from the venue to a ridge road can turn ten minutes of portraits into the frames you remember.
The Alps and the Susa Valley
West of Turin the land rises quickly into the Alps. The Susa Valley leads from the city towards France, and Susa itself sits in the Alpine foothills, an old town with Roman remains, including the Arch of Augustus, and quiet streets of stone.
In 2024 I photographed Musa and Solmaz's pre-wedding session in Susa, with Solmaz in her gown and veil; their wedding itself was in Baku, and I photographed that too. The session moved between a sunlit courtyard with soft terracotta arches, gardens and the stone streets, with the mountains close behind. It is a good example of what the valleys offer: intimacy, shade in summer, and a landscape that does not need decorating. Their story is on their page.

The royal residences around Turin
The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, around and inside Turin, have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, and several host weddings:
- The Reggia di Venaria Reale. On request, a civil ceremony can be celebrated in the Sala di Diana, the great seventeenth-century hall facing the gardens, and wedding photographs can be taken inside the Reggia and in the gardens.
- The Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, the Savoy hunting lodge about 10 km south of Turin, owned by the Fondazione Ordine Mauriziano, offers its halls for wedding receptions.
- The Castello Reale di Govone, a Savoy residence with grassy terraces and wide views over the hills, hosts ceremonies and wedding banquets in its Salone d'Onore, park, boxwood gardens, greenhouse and Royal Chapel; its enquiry form offers both civil and religious weddings.
Mohammed and Hejrat married at the town hall in July 2026 and then moved on to the Reggia di Venaria: the light of the Galleria Grande, the gardens, and bridesmaids in sage green with white parasols. I have written a separate guide to weddings at the Reggia di Venaria, and their story is on their page.

Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore
North of Turin, Piedmont reaches the lakes. Lake Orta is small and quiet, with Orta San Giulio and its island; Lake Maggiore's Piedmont shore has Stresa, the Borromean Islands and Verbania. Both are a different kind of wedding from the hills, built around boats and water, and I have a separate page on Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
Harvest and truffle season: light and weather
Autumn in the wine hills, in harvest season, has a soft, low light I love. The vendemmia, the grape harvest, fills September and runs into October, so estates are busy with their own work in those weeks. The vines turn yellow and red as October goes on, and the days shorten: the sun sets around 7.40 pm in mid-September and about 6.45 pm in mid-October, before the clocks change at the end of the month.
Truffle season follows. In Piedmont the white truffle of Alba (Tuber magnatum) may be gathered from 1 October to 31 January, and gathering every species of truffle is forbidden throughout September. In 2026 the 96th Alba International White Truffle Fair runs from 10 October to 6 December, so if you marry near Alba in those weeks, book hotel rooms and restaurants early.
Summer is a different story. In the Langhe, average highs in July and August reach about 29°C (1995 to 2024 averages), and July is among the driest months, so avoid ceremonies in full afternoon sun and keep the portraits for the last hour of light, around 9.15 pm in June. May is green and long-lit but among the wettest months in Piedmont, and late autumn brings grey days. Every collection includes a rain plan agreed before the day.
Piedmont wedding venues: wine estates, castles and farmhouses
Piedmont weddings tend to happen in three kinds of places:
- Wine estates, where the vineyards are the backdrop and the dinner is built around the estate's own wines. At Serralunga d'Alba, for example, Fontanafredda's Villaggio Narrante reserves its Garden del Lago, among vineyards and old trees, exclusively for a wedding.
- Castles and historic houses. The castle of Serralunga d'Alba hosts weddings, civil unions and symbolic ceremonies for small groups in its garden, its Sala dei Valvassori and its panoramic tower, and welcomes couples for photographs. The Castello Falletti in Barolo, home of the WiMu wine museum, offers a hall looking over the Barolo hills for the ceremony and a terrace for the toast. At Grinzane Cavour, weddings take place in the castle's Sala delle Maschere, which is also the village's council room.
- Agriturismi and country houses, working farms that host guests, often more relaxed and better suited to smaller weddings, with long tables outdoors.
Ask every venue three questions early: can a legal civil ceremony be celebrated on site, what is the plan if it rains, and what time must music end.
Civil ceremonies in small comuni
In Italy a legal civil ceremony is celebrated by the Comune's civil status officer, in the town hall or in a place the Comune has authorised. Some comuni have authorised historic rooms, castles or gardens, usually for a fee, and each sets its own days, hours and prices. Ask the Comune where the venue stands, in writing, before you book.
If the venue is not authorised, a short legal ceremony at the town hall in the morning and a symbolic ceremony at the venue in the late afternoon work well together, and they let you set the second ceremony around the light. My free guide to planning a wedding in Italy explains the documents foreign couples need.
Getting there: Turin, Milan and Cuneo airports
Turin Airport at Caselle, north of the city, is the closest to Turin, Venaria and the Susa Valley. Milan Malpensa, a major international airport, suits Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and northern Monferrato. Cuneo Airport at Levaldigi is a smaller regional airport in the south of Piedmont. By car, Alba is roughly an hour from Turin and about two hours from Malpensa, depending on traffic.
Hill roads are narrow and slow, and Saturday traffic adds minutes, so for guests a shuttle from the hotel to the venue is usually kinder than thirty rental cars on a winding road at midnight.
Turin sessions and engagements
Not every Piedmont story is a wedding. I photograph engagement and pre-wedding sessions in Turin and around Piedmont, and love stories. Gabriele and Maddalena's spring session was under the cherry blossom of a Turin park; Daria and Andrea's save the date, in June 2026, was in a quiet garden in the city, photographed and filmed. If you are marrying in the city, my page on wedding photography in Turin covers its town hall rooms and photo spots.

FAQ
What is the best time of year for a wedding in Piedmont?
May, June, September and October. June gives the longest evenings, with sunset around 9.15 pm. September and October bring the harvest, softer light and cooler evenings, though the days shorten. July and August are hot in the hills, and May is among the wettest months, so a covered plan matters whatever you choose.
Can we have a legal ceremony at a castle or winery in the Langhe?
Only if the Comune has authorised that space for civil ceremonies, so ask the Comune in writing, with your date, before you book. If the space is not authorised, marry legally at the town hall, perhaps in the morning, and hold a symbolic ceremony at the castle or winery in the late afternoon light.
How far is the Langhe from Turin and Milan?
By car, Alba is roughly an hour from Turin and about two hours from Milan Malpensa, depending on traffic. Cuneo Airport at Levaldigi is a smaller regional option. Hill roads are narrow and slow, so plan transfers between hotels and the venue with a buffer, and consider a shuttle for guests.
Do you work in the Susa Valley and the mountains?
Yes. In 2024 I photographed Musa and Solmaz's pre-wedding session in Susa, in the Alpine foothills west of Turin. Mountain venues give shade in summer and dramatic backdrops, but the weather changes quickly, so the rain plan and the timing of portraits matter even more than in the hills.
Is harvest season a good time to marry in the Langhe?
For light and atmosphere, yes: the vines turn gold and the evenings cool. The trade-offs are shorter days in October, the Alba truffle fair from 10 October (book hotels early), and estates busy with their own harvest, so confirm early that your venue hosts weddings during the vendemmia.
Do you travel across Piedmont, and is travel included?
Yes, I work across the whole region from Turin. Travel and accommodation are not included in my collections; they are added transparently to your quote. For Turin and nearby there is usually little to add; for the Langhe, Monferrato or the lakes, I quote the real cost before you sign.
