Lake Maggiore wedding photographer: Stresa, the Borromean Islands and Lake Orta
I'm a wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Turin, about an hour and a half to two hours from Stresa by car, and I travel to Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta for weddings, elopements and engagements.
If you are looking for a Lake Maggiore wedding photographer, here is the honest version first. I am based in Turin, not on the lake: Stresa is about an hour and a half to two hours away by car, depending on traffic, and I travel there the way I travel to Lake Como or the Langhe. The lake photographs on this site were taken on Lake Como, and every image on this page says where it was made.
What travels with me is the way I work: one person photographing and filming the day on one timeline, a plan built around the light, and a calm presence your guests soon forget. Below is what I would tell you about Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta over coffee: where you can legally marry, what it costs at the town hall, how the boats work, and when the light is best. The official sources are listed at the end.
Stresa and the Borromean Islands
Stresa is the lake's classic wedding town: grand hotels along the water, a lakefront promenade, and the Borromean Islands a short boat ride offshore. It sits on the Piedmont shore at the foot of the Mottarone, looking across the Borromean Gulf.
The three islands are very different places:
- Isola Bella is almost entirely a palace and its terraced baroque garden, run as a museum by Terre Borromeo.
- Isola Madre is the largest and greenest, a sixteenth-century palace in a botanical park, also run by Terre Borromeo.
- Isola dei Pescatori (Isola Superiore) is still a small village of fishermen's houses and lanes, with restaurants on the water, and it is where the Comune di Stresa celebrates civil weddings.
Isola Bella and Isola Madre are museums first, and their visit rules matter for couples. Visitors may not enter in ceremonial attire, photography and filming need Terre Borromeo's prior authorisation, and tripods and professional equipment are not allowed without it. Drones are banned on Isola Bella.
In 2026 both islands are open from 12 March to 8 November, with the gardens closing at 6 pm until 24 October and at 5 pm after that. Terre Borromeo also offers exclusive visits, such as a private tour with an aperitif in the gardens, and its wedding page offers receptions at the Delfino restaurant on Isola Bella and at La Piratera on Isola Madre. If you want portraits on either island, ask Terre Borromeo first what can be authorised.
Every visitor landing on the islands pays the Comune di Stresa's landing tax of €0.50 per island. Small details like this belong in the guest information, not in a surprise on the jetty.
Where you can legally marry in Stresa
The Comune di Stresa publishes one of the clearest wedding pages on the lake. It celebrates civil weddings in four kinds of place:
- The Sala del Sindaco, the mayor's historic room in the town hall, with a view of the lake, for about 30 people.
- A small wedding room on Isola dei Pescatori, for about 15 people.
- The "coda" of Isola dei Pescatori, the tip of the island, for a ceremony outdoors.
- Villa Frua and Villa Muggia, two historic villas under agreement with the Comune, for the ceremony alone or with the reception.
The fees for couples who live outside Stresa (Giunta resolution 52/2022) are:
| Where | Weekday office hours | Weekday afternoon, outside office hours | Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday 10 am to noon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town hall (Sala del Sindaco, Sala Giunta) | €500 | €1,000 | €1,750 |
| Isola dei Pescatori and agreed private venues | €750 | €1,250 | €1,750 |
A symbolic repeat of the ceremony in a private place adds €1,000 to the base fee. Foreign couples need a nulla osta or a certificate of capacity to marry, and, if you do not speak Italian, an interpreter who signs a sworn statement, both delivered a few days before the wedding. My free guide to planning a wedding in Italy explains the paperwork.
Verbania, Arona and Cannobio
Verbania joins Pallanza, Intra and Suna along the curve of the lake north of Stresa. The Comune celebrates civil weddings at the town hall in Pallanza, at Villa Giulia, at Villa Maioni (the library in Intra) and at the Museo del Paesaggio. Since July 2024 the fee for non-residents is €500 at the town hall, €1,500 at Villa Giulia and €600 at Villa Maioni or the Museo del Paesaggio, paid 30 days before. The botanical gardens of Villa Taranto in Pallanza have their own boat stop in front of the entrance, and Intra is the terminal of the car ferry to Laveno on the Lombard shore.
Arona, at the southern end of the Piedmont shore, is the closest lake town to Malpensa. Across the water stands the Rocca di Angera, the medieval castle on the Lombard shore that Terre Borromeo presents as its main wedding venue, with frescoed halls, courtyards and a belvedere over the lake.
Cannobio, near the Swiss border, is a smaller town of narrow lanes and a lakefront of coloured houses, further from the airports and quieter for it. For Arona and Cannobio I did not find an official list of wedding rooms online, so ask each Comune directly.
Lake Orta and Orta San Giulio
Lake Orta lies just west of Lake Maggiore and is smaller and quieter. Orta San Giulio is compact and walkable: a square on the water, lanes of old houses, and the island of San Giulio a few minutes offshore by boat. The Comune celebrates civil weddings in the wedding room of Villa Bossi, its town hall, and in the villa's garden.
The island is a place of silence. The former seminary is now the Mater Ecclesiae monastery of Benedictine nuns, and a Path of Silence and Meditation runs around it, so it suits a quiet walk and a few portraits rather than a celebration. Photography inside the Basilica of San Giulio needs a written request. Above the town, the Sacro Monte di Orta is part of the UNESCO site of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy.
For a small wedding or an elopement, Orta works well: distances are short, the scale is human, and a boat to the island and back fits easily into a portrait hour.
Boats and timing
The public boats on Lake Maggiore are run by Navigazione Laghi. A short line links Carciano, at Stresa, with Isola Bella, boats tour the three islands from Stresa, longer lines run between Arona and Locarno, and a car ferry crosses between Intra and Laveno. The timetable changes with the season: in 2026 the summer timetable runs from 29 March to 4 October and the autumn one from 5 October to 8 November. Private taxi boats for the islands leave from Piazza Marconi in Stresa.
For the whole party, a boat can be chartered: Navigazione Laghi's fleet is available for private transfers and events when it is not running the public service, and ceremonies can be held on board. Its Lake Maggiore boats carry from 100 to 1,000 passengers, with prices from €1,500 plus 10% VAT for an Airone-class boat for eight hours of service, of which two under way; the final price depends on route, timing and boat.
A boat in the last hour of light is the most beautiful twenty minutes of a lake wedding, so I build the timeline around it. On the water a veil becomes a sail, so we decide beforehand whether it stays on. And we agree whether I ride with you or photograph you leaving from the jetty.

Getting there from Milan Malpensa and Turin
Milan Malpensa is the nearest large airport to the Piedmont shore. In season, Alibus coaches link the airport with Arona, Stresa, Baveno and Verbania (from 1 April to 31 October in 2026, booked online). From Turin it is about an hour and a half to two hours by car to Stresa, which is the drive I make for a wedding there.
Travel and accommodation are not included in my collections; they are added transparently to your quote, so you see them before you sign.
Light and seasons
From mid-May to mid-August the sun sets after 8.30 pm, around 9.15 pm in June; by mid-September it is closer to 7.40 pm. Stresa faces the water with the Mottarone behind it, so the evening sun leaves its waterfront before the official sunset, while the Lombard shore opposite faces the sunset. I like to see the place at the hour of your portraits before promising a sunset frame.
July and August are the busiest months on the islands and the promenades; May, June and September give long evenings with more room. Every collection includes a rain plan agreed before the day, with covered spots at the venue and an interior nearby.

How I work as a Lake Maggiore wedding photographer
Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation: the timeline built around the light, the photo spots and a rain plan. I work directly with planners, and I speak English, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Azerbaijani with your families and guests. Collections cover up to 6, 8 or 12 hours of photo and film, and I send them with their prices personally once I know your date and venue; write to me.
I am also a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3). On the lakes I fly only where the d-flight map, the venue and EU rules allow, and never over guests gathered together; on Isola Bella, drones are not allowed at all. For more about filming, see my page on photo and film by one author, and for the other great lake, Lake Como.

FAQ
Are you based on Lake Maggiore?
No. I am based in Turin, about an hour and a half to two hours from Stresa by car, and I travel to Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta for weddings, elopements and engagements. Travel and accommodation are added transparently to your quote, so you know the full cost before you book.
Can we get married on the Borromean Islands?
Yes, on Isola dei Pescatori: the Comune di Stresa celebrates civil weddings in a small room for about 15 people or outdoors at the tip of the island, for €750 to €1,750 if you live outside Stresa, depending on day and time. Isola Bella and Isola Madre are museums run by Terre Borromeo, which does not admit visitors in ceremonial attire and requires authorisation for photography, though it offers wedding receptions at its restaurants on both islands.
Can we have a legal civil ceremony in Stresa?
Yes. The Comune celebrates civil weddings in the mayor's room at the town hall (about 30 people), on Isola dei Pescatori, and at Villa Frua and Villa Muggia. For non-residents the fee runs from €500 on a weekday morning at the town hall to €1,750 at weekends. You need a nulla osta and, if you do not speak Italian, a sworn interpreter.
Is Lake Orta good for a small wedding or elopement?
It suits them well. Orta San Giulio is compact and close to the water, civil ceremonies take place at Villa Bossi and in its garden, and the island of San Giulio is minutes away by boat. Remember that the island is a monastery's place of silence, so keep it for a quiet walk and portraits rather than the party.
How do guests get to Lake Maggiore?
Milan Malpensa is the nearest large airport, and in season Alibus coaches run from there to Arona, Stresa, Baveno and Verbania. Turin is about an hour and a half to two hours away by car. Around the lake, Navigazione Laghi boats link the towns and the islands on a seasonal timetable, and a car ferry crosses between Intra and Laveno.
When should we book a Lake Maggiore wedding photographer?
For a Saturday between May and September, nine to fifteen months ahead is ideal. Weekdays, small weddings and the quieter months have more room. Your date is reserved when the agreement is signed and the deposit paid, and if your wedding is sooner, write anyway: I will tell you straight away whether I am free.
Planning a wedding on Lake Maggiore or Lake Orta?
Send me your date and venue, or just the town you are considering, and I will reply personally within a day or two. If it helps, we can have a free 20-minute video call after my reply; the steps are on how it works. If you are still comparing regions, see my page on Piedmont.
