A Castello di Govone wedding, a Savoy royal residence in Piedmont
The Castello Reale di Govone, between Alba and Asti, hosts legal civil ceremonies, garden receptions and wedding photos, and publishes its prices. Here is what the rules say, and how I would plan the light.
A Castello di Govone wedding is one of the few royal-residence weddings in Piedmont with its rules and prices in the open. The Comune celebrates civil weddings in the castle, and the association that runs it publishes what each room and garden costs. I have not photographed a wedding at Govone, but I have photographed one at its sister residence, the Reggia di Venaria. This guide puts together what the castle and the Comune publish, checked in October 2026, with how I would plan the day.
What the Castello di Govone is
Work on the castle began in 1675 to a design by Guarino Guarini and went on for about a century. It became a Savoy property at the end of the 18th century and the summer residence of King Carlo Felice. Later the Comune bought it; the town hall still shares its address. Since 2015 the Associazione Govone Residenza Sabauda has managed and promoted it.
Inside are the rooms people remember: the Salone d'Onore with its painted trompe-l'oeil, and the Chinese rooms lined with rare papers from China. Outside, the castle describes a garden of box-edged paths, tulips from late March, a garden of old roses in May, and three terraces looking over the Langhe, the Roero, the Alps and the Apennines, with Monviso on clear days.
Which spaces host ceremonies and receptions
The castle names these for weddings: the Salone d'Onore, the park, the gardens with their box-lined paths, the Serra (the old greenhouse), the Cappella Reale and the south-facing lawn. Its hire rules (online since 2023) give the prices, VAT included:
| Space | Hire | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Salone d'Onore | €500 | No food or drink allowed |
| Sala dei Priori | €350 | No food or drink allowed |
| Serra (greenhouse) | €250 summer, €300 winter | Refreshments allowed |
| Atrio (entrance hall) | €500 | Standing buffet only, or on closing days |
| Galleria Alfieri and rooms | €500 | Refreshments allowed |
| Giardino dei Fiori (east side) | €550 | Outdoor |
| South side (Piazza Roma, in front of the castle), 6 pm to midnight | €1,500 (€2,000 with set-up before 6 pm) | Outdoor |
| North lawn | €1,000 | Outdoor |
On top come a refundable security deposit of 30% and €25 an hour for security staff if needed. Capacities, exclusive use and catering rules are not published, so ask. The castle also has a restaurant, Le Scuderie del Castello, which offers events and catering.

Can you have a legal civil ceremony at the Castello di Govone?
Yes. The Comune's regulation allows civil weddings in the town hall's council rooms or "in the salone delle feste of the castle of Govone". The standard slot is Saturday morning, from 9 am to 12.30 pm. Other days and times are possible at a higher fee.
From 1 July 2026 the castle room costs €600, or €300 if at least one of you lives in Govone. On weekdays in office hours it is €500 (€250 for residents), and any other day or time adds €200 (€100 for residents) to the room fee. The regulation also forbids throwing rice, confetti or sugared almonds inside the rooms, with a €150 cleaning charge if you do. Throw petals outside.
The castle also offers its Cappella Reale and lists religious weddings on its contact form; a Catholic ceremony also needs your parish and the diocese. My free guide to getting married in Italy covers the papers by nationality.
Getting there: Alba, Asti, Turin and the climb
- From Alba or Asti: about 20 minutes by car (my estimate).
- From Turin: about an hour by car, roughly 57 km (my estimate).
- Airports: Cuneo Levaldigi is roughly an hour away; Turin Caselle about an hour and a half (my estimates).
- Parking: in the avenue below the castle and in the square in front of the cemetery.
- The last stretch: in the castle's words, "a steep cobbled climb". People with reduced mobility can be driven to the entrance and visit the park, but the interiors are not accessible to wheelchair users.
Plan a car for grandparents and a sensible pair of shoes for the climb.
Light and the best portrait spots
Monviso lies to the west-south-west of Govone (my reading of the map), roughly where the sun sets in spring and autumn, so the terrace towards the Alps is the sunset terrace. In Govone the sun sets at about 8.45 pm in mid May, 9.15 pm in late June and 7.40 pm in mid September.
- The terraces: the long view over hills to the Alps, best in the last hour of light.
- The box garden: clipped lines and gravel paths; keep it for shade or soft evening light.
- The rose garden: May is its month.
- The Chinese rooms and Salone d'Onore: window light and painted walls for a quiet indoor session, with the €250 interior photo fee.

A suggested Castello di Govone wedding day
A June Saturday, using the standard ceremony slot.

- 11.00 am Civil ceremony in the castle.
- 11.45 am Petals outside, then family photos in the shade of the park.

- 1.30 pm Lunch, then a long Italian pause.
- 7.00 pm Couple portraits on the terraces and in the box garden.

- 9.15 pm Ten minutes for the sunset towards the Alps.
Rules that affect photo and film
- Photo fees: private shoots such as weddings are free in the outdoor spaces and €250 a day inside (free for Govone residents). Commercial shoots cost more.
- Visitors: the castle opens from March to December, Friday to Sunday, 10 am to 12.30 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm. A Saturday ceremony shares the castle with visitors; ask about closing the rooms you use. From mid November to mid December the Christmas fair fills the castle.
- Music: Govone's acoustic regulation allows temporary noisy activities from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 1 am, for up to seven hours in a row, with a written request 30 days ahead. Ask if your party needs one.
- Drones: I am a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3). No venue rule is published; I check d-flight and fly only away from guests.
Weather plan
Govone has more indoor options than most: the Salone d'Onore, the Serra, the Atrio, the Galleria Alfieri and the Chinese rooms. Remember the food rule, though: no refreshments in the Salone d'Onore or the Sala dei Priori. A good rain plan puts the ceremony in the Salone, the aperitivo in the Serra and dinner in the Galleria Alfieri; ask whether those rooms seat your guests.
How I would plan photo and film at Govone
I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, so nobody waits for "the video person". At Govone I would book the interior photo session for a quiet hour, keep the terraces for the evening, and film the walk from the ceremony room into the gardens in one take. You can see how I worked at the Reggia di Venaria in Mohammed and Hejrat's story.
Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we plan the light, the spots and the rain plan. More on Piedmont is on my Piedmont page, and typical prices are in my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy.

FAQ
Can you get legally married at the Castello di Govone?
Yes. The Comune of Govone's regulation lists the castle's salone delle feste as a place for civil weddings. The standard slot is Saturday from 9 am to 12.30 pm; other days and times cost extra. From 1 July 2026 the castle room costs €600, or €300 if one of you lives in Govone.
How much does a wedding at the Castello di Govone cost?
The castle publishes its hire prices: €500 for the Salone d'Onore, €250 to €300 for the greenhouse, €1,500 for the south side from 6 pm to midnight, plus a refundable 30% security deposit. Catering is separate. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date; write to me.
Can we take wedding photos at the castle?
Yes. Private photo shoots such as weddings are free in the castle's outdoor spaces and cost €250 a day inside (free for Govone residents). Book the interior session through the castle and ask which rooms are included and at what time, especially on visiting days.
Can we throw rice or confetti at the Castello di Govone?
Not inside. The Comune's wedding regulation forbids throwing rice, confetti or sugared almonds in the rooms, with a €150 cleaning charge. Plan petals or bubbles for the moment you step outside instead, and tell your guests in advance, so nobody brings a bag of rice into the ceremony room.
Is the Castello di Govone open to visitors on a wedding day?
From March to December it opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am to 12.30 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm, so a Saturday ceremony can overlap with visitors. Ask the castle which rooms can be closed for you, and avoid the Christmas fair weeks if you want quiet.
How do we get to Govone from Turin?
By car it is about an hour, roughly 57 km. Alba and Asti are each about 20 minutes away. Park in the avenue below the castle or in front of the cemetery, then walk up a steep cobbled climb; people with reduced mobility can be driven to the entrance.
