A Villa Cimbrone wedding: symbolic yes, civil and Catholic no

Villa Cimbrone is a small hotel with famous public gardens above the Gulf of Salerno. It hosts symbolic and some religious ceremonies, but not civil or Catholic ones. Here is how a day there works, and how I would plan the light.

A Villa Cimbrone wedding usually starts with a picture in your head: the Terrace of Infinity, a line of marble busts, and the sea far below. I have not photographed a wedding at Villa Cimbrone, so I will not pretend otherwise. This guide puts together what the villa and the Comune di Ravello publish, checked in October 2026, with how I plan photo and film for a garden wedding on the coast.

What Villa Cimbrone is

The villa's own history traces the estate back to the 11th century, when it appears as "Cimbronium". The gardens as people know them today owe most to Lord Grimthorpe, Ernest Beckett, who shaped the place in the early 1900s. Today it is run as Hotel Villa Cimbrone by the Vuilleumier family, hoteliers in Ravello since 1874 and now in their fifth generation.

The villa can be reached only on foot. The hotel has just 19 guest rooms, so most of your guests will sleep elsewhere in Ravello. The kitchen uses produce from the villa's own organic gardens.

Which ceremonies and spaces the villa offers

The villa is precise about ceremonies. On its Italian events page it says it organises "Protestant, Waldensian with civil effects, Jewish and other religious ceremonies, as well as symbolic ceremonies, except for the Catholic and civil rites" (my translation). Its own team handles the food and wine.

The villa does not publish a list of event spaces with capacities. For a wedding, ask about:

  • The Terrace of Infinity: the famous belvedere over the gulf, part of the public gardens.
  • The gardens: lawns, avenues and statues, also public during opening hours.
  • The rooms of the villa: the villa names its "refined rooms" as event spaces, and they are your rain plan.
  • Dinner: where it can be served, for how many, and until what time.

Ask too whether the gardens close early to visitors on your day; otherwise your ceremony and the afternoon visitors share the same paths.

Not a civil one, and not a Catholic one. But the villa does list Waldensian ceremonies "with civil effects": a Protestant rite that, celebrated by a Waldensian minister after the usual banns at the Comune, is legally valid in Italy. If that fits you, talk to the Waldensian Church and the Comune as early as possible.

For a civil wedding, the Comune di Ravello celebrates only at its own sites: Palazzo Tolla, its representative hall, and the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte. For couples who do not live in Ravello the fee is €650 from Monday to Thursday and €850 from Friday to Sunday and on holidays. The Comune's rules set fixed time slots (from May to August: 11 am, 12.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 5 pm and 6.30 pm), forbid confetti, allow acoustic music only, and keep a rain room for up to 40 guests. Some dates are excluded, including the patron saint's days on 26 and 27 July and 15 August.

So the simplest plan is a short legal ceremony in town, then the walk to the villa for a symbolic ceremony and dinner. My free guide to getting married in Italy covers the documents by nationality.

Getting there: Naples, Amalfi and the last stretch on foot

  • From Naples airport (Capodichino): the Comune's 2023 taxi tariffs list €150 to €170 for Ravello to Capodichino.
  • By sea: hydrofoils run from Salerno to Amalfi; Ravello is 7 km above Amalfi by road, and the Comune lists €55 for a taxi from Amalfi (1 to 4 people).
  • By car from Naples: the fastest route given by Villa Rufolo is the motorway to the Angri Sud exit, then over the Valico di Chiunzi pass.
  • The coast road: on busy days in season, ANAS applies alternate number plates on the Amalfi Coast road (SS163), with exemptions for hotel guests on arrival and departure, taxis and private hire. Check the dates for your month.
  • The last stretch: "Hotel Villa Cimbrone is reachable along a panoramic stone paved walk way alternated by steps, for about 10 minutes' walk from the main centre."

That walk shapes the whole day. Ask the villa how luggage, flowers and equipment arrive, and give older guests a slower schedule.

Light and the best portrait spots

The terraces look south and south-east over the Gulf of Salerno. By my reading of the map, the sun sets behind the hills to the west, so the terraces fall into shade before sunset while the sea and far shore still glow. In Ravello the sun sets around 8.10 pm in mid May, 8.35 pm in late June and 7.10 pm in mid September.

  • The Terrace of Infinity: best in that soft shade of the late afternoon and evening, with the gulf still bright behind you.
  • The garden avenues: open shade under trees in the afternoon; keep the midday sun off faces.
  • Morning: the sun rises over the far shore of the gulf. An early session, before the gardens open at 9 am, is worth asking about.

The gardens are open to the public from 9 am to 7 pm, last entry 6.30 pm, with occasional extraordinary closures. Evening portraits after 7 pm need the villa's agreement.

A suggested Villa Cimbrone wedding day

A June shape with a legal ceremony in town.

  1. 11.00 am Getting ready at the villa or a hotel in Ravello.
  2. 3.30 pm Civil ceremony at Palazzo Tolla or the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte.
  3. 4.15 pm The walk to Villa Cimbrone together, filmed on the way.
  4. 5.30 pm Symbolic ceremony in the gardens.
  5. 6.15 pm Aperitivo; family photos, ten minutes, with a list.
  6. 7.15 pm Couple portraits on the terraces as the light softens, after the gardens close.
  7. 8.15 pm Dinner at the villa, with ten minutes out for the last light over the gulf.
  8. 10.00 pm Cake and first dance, within the end time the villa agrees.

Rules that affect photo and film

  • Photo and film: the villa lists filming and photography among its event services but publishes no fee. Ask what applies to your photographer.
  • Drones: I am a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3), but EU rules never allow open-category flights over gatherings of people, and the gardens are public by day. I would check d-flight and ask the villa first.
  • Music: no end time is published. Ravello's police regulation keeps outdoor noise within legal limits, with exceptions on written request.
  • Fireworks: Ravello allows them only with a special authorisation.

Weather plan

The villa's own rain plan is its interior rooms. Ask how many guests they seat and whether the ceremony and dinner can both move inside. In rain, the stone path with steps needs umbrellas, time and sensible shoes.

How I would plan photo and film at Villa Cimbrone

I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, so nobody waits for "the video person". At Cimbrone I would build the day around two things: the walk from the town to the villa, which tells the story of Ravello on its own, and the hour when the terraces are in shade and the gulf is still bright.

Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we work out the light, the spots and the rain plan together. For typical budgets, see my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy.

FAQ

Can you get legally married at Villa Cimbrone?

Not with a civil or Catholic ceremony: the villa excludes both. It does list Waldensian ceremonies with civil effects, which are legally valid when arranged through the Waldensian Church, plus Protestant, Jewish, other religious and symbolic ceremonies. For a civil wedding, the Comune di Ravello uses Palazzo Tolla and the Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte, then you walk to the villa.

How much does a wedding at Villa Cimbrone cost?

The villa does not publish wedding prices or capacities; everything is quoted on request by its events team. The Comune di Ravello charges non-residents €650 for a civil ceremony from Monday to Thursday and €850 from Friday to Sunday. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date; write to me.

Can guests drive to Villa Cimbrone?

No. The villa says it cannot be reached by car: guests walk about 10 minutes from the centre of Ravello on a stone path with steps. Plan time, comfortable shoes and help for older guests, and ask the villa how luggage and suppliers' equipment reach it.

Are the gardens open to the public on our wedding day?

They open every day from 9 am to 7 pm, last entry 6.30 pm, with occasional extraordinary closures. Ask the villa whether the gardens can close early for your event and from what time, and plan the ceremony and portraits around the answer.

Can we have a Catholic wedding at Villa Cimbrone?

No, the villa excludes Catholic rites. The Comune di Ravello points couples to the cathedral complex in the town for Catholic weddings. You can then celebrate at the villa, with a symbolic ceremony if you wish. Confirm dates with the parish first.

When is the best light at Villa Cimbrone?

Late afternoon and evening, when the terraces fall into shade but the gulf is still bright. The sun sets around 8.35 pm in late June and 7.10 pm in mid September. Early morning before the gardens open is lovely too, if the villa agrees.
