A wedding at Villa d'Este, Cernobbio

Villa d'Este hosts symbolic ceremonies and receptions on Lake Como, while the legal ceremony happens at the Comune di Cernobbio. Here is what the hotel publishes about rooms, rules and arrival, and how I would plan the light.

If you are planning a Villa d'Este wedding, you have seen the pictures: the Renaissance villa on the water at Cernobbio, the mosaic and its nymphaeum, the long perspective up to Hercules. Harder to find is how the day works: where you can legally marry, which rooms hold how many guests, what the photo policy allows and when the sun leaves the garden. This guide gathers what the hotel and the Comune di Cernobbio publish, checked in October 2026. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa d'Este, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.

What Villa d'Este is

In 1568 the architect Pellegrino Pellegrini, known as Il Tibaldi, designed the villa as a summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, Bishop of Como. It became a luxury hotel in 1873, and in 1913 the villa and its ten-hectare park were declared a National Monument. The park holds camellias, magnolias, wisteria and cypresses, the mosaic garden, the Fountain of Hercules and the Temple of Telemachus.

Where ceremonies and receptions happen

For ceremonies the hotel names "the Lake Terrace, the historic Park and the timeless interiors", and the Mosaic Garden among its outdoor spaces, without published capacities: ask with your guest count. For receptions it publishes these figures:

Space Capacity published
Impero Room, "the preferred venue for the most elegant wedding receptions" 210 seated, 350 to 400 for cocktails
Grill Terrace 150 seated
Artusi Room, with a panoramic terrace over the lake 80 to 100 seated
Colonne Room 60 to 80 seated, up to 200 for cocktails
Regina Room, in the Queen's Pavilion (1856) 250 theatre-style

Can you legally marry at Villa d'Este?

No. The Comune di Cernobbio's wedding rules, amended on 25 June 2026, allow civil weddings in two places only: the Sala Stemmi in the town hall and Villa Bernasconi, the Comune's Liberty-style villa museum. A ceremony at the hotel is therefore symbolic.

The Comune's slots are Monday to Friday at 10 am, 11.30 am and 1 pm, Saturday at 10 am and 11.30 am, plus Thursday at 3.30 pm and 5 pm; other times until 6 pm cost more. No ceremonies on Sundays or public holidays, including 2 June and 15 August. For non-residents the Sala Stemmi costs €500 and Villa Bernasconi €1,200. Apply at least 30 days ahead; my free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers by nationality. A shape that works: the legal ceremony with close family on Friday morning, the symbolic one at the villa on Saturday.

Bedrooms, villas and exclusive use

The hotel has 151 bedrooms, 124 in the Cardinal's Building and 27 in the Queen's Pavilion. Four private villas on the grounds publish nightly prices: Villa Cima (four bedrooms) from €13,500, Villa Garrovo (six bedrooms) from €12,900, Villa Malakoff from €8,350 and the Mosaic House from €4,500. The hotel offers "the option of reserving the entire property".

Wedding packages, minimum spend and room hire are quoted on request. The hotel closes for part of the winter (it was open 295 days in 2025), and in May the Concorso d'Eleganza car show takes over a weekend; the 2027 edition is listed from 21 May.

Getting there: airports, roads and boats

  • Airports (the hotel's figures): Milan Malpensa 60 km, about 48 minutes; Linate 70 km, about an hour; Bergamo Orio al Serio 100 km, about 1 hour 40.
  • By road: A9 motorway, exit for Como and the lake, then through the village. Free private car park for hotel guests; ask about wedding guests' cars.
  • By public boat: Cernobbio is on Navigazione Laghi's Como line; the pier is five minutes on foot.
  • By private boat or air: a private dock on request through the concierge, and a helipad.

Photo and film rules at Villa d'Este

The hotel's photography policy has a wedding section. Photography and filming follow the event schedule under the Events Team's coordination, in the spaces reserved for your wedding, the Gardens, Terrazza Mantero, the Mosaico Area (outside breakfast and lunch service), your room or suite, and any privately reserved boat. Restaurants and outdoor terraces are off limits during service, and other guests should not be photographed without consent.

Drones are permitted "only for events with exclusive use of the property and must be authorized in advance", and seaplanes fly from Como at the south end of the lake, so I also check the d-flight map. Two questions for the Events Team: whether the supervision fee charged to external photographers at ordinary guest sessions (€1,000 June to September, €600 otherwise) applies to weddings, and the written consent the policy requires before images are used commercially. Flash rules are not published.

Light: the best time for portraits

The lakefront faces east-southeast, so the afternoon sun moves behind the villa and the hill. By my calculation from the terrain, the sun goes behind the mountains above Cernobbio at about 7.10 pm in mid-May, 7.25 pm from mid-June to mid-July, 6.45 pm in mid-September and 5.55 pm in mid-October, long before sunset (about 9.15 pm in June).

That gap is useful. For an hour or more the garden sits in soft, even shade while the far shore and the sky still glow, kind to faces and to a white dress. I would keep it for portraits by the mosaic and the lake, then a few minutes on a boat as the light leaves the water.

Rain plan

The hotel publishes no rain plan, but the indoor rooms above are real options. Lake Como is wetter than Turin in every month, and May and August are among its wetter months, so agree the indoor ceremony room with the Events Team when you book. Overcast light on the lake is soft and flattering.

A suggested Villa d'Este wedding day (June)

  1. Friday, 11.30 am Civil ceremony at the Sala Stemmi, with close family.
  2. Saturday, 1.30 pm Getting ready in your suite.
  3. 4.30 pm Symbolic ceremony on the Lake Terrace or in the gardens.
  4. 5.15 pm Aperitivo; family photos in the garden.
  5. 7.15 pm Portraits as the sun leaves the garden.
  6. 8.00 pm A short private boat ride, if booked, with light still on the water.
  7. 8.30 pm Dinner in the Impero Room or on the Grill Terrace.

Photographing and filming a Villa d'Este wedding: my plan

I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, so there is one quiet person among your guests instead of a crew. Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we build the timeline around the light, choose photo spots and agree the rain plan, and I work directly with planners and the Events Team.

At Villa d'Este I would put the questions above, plus the ceremony capacity of your chosen space, to the Events Team early and in writing. Above about 150 guests I would suggest a second photographer or videographer, so the aperitivo is covered while I am with the two of you. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding.

FAQ

Can you have a legal wedding at Villa d'Este?

Not at the hotel. The Comune di Cernobbio celebrates civil weddings only in the Sala Stemmi of the town hall or at Villa Bernasconi, so couples marry legally there with close family and hold a symbolic ceremony at Villa d'Este. For non-residents the Comune charges €500 for the Sala Stemmi and €1,200 for Villa Bernasconi in standard slots.

How much does a wedding at Villa d'Este cost?

The hotel does not publish wedding prices, minimum spend or room hire; its events team quotes on request. It does publish nightly prices for its private villas, from €4,500 for the Mosaic House to €13,500 for Villa Cima. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date, with travel quoted separately; write to me.

Can we book the whole of Villa d'Este?

The hotel offers "the option of reserving the entire property". With 151 bedrooms and four private villas, most guest lists can stay on site. Exclusive use is also the only case in which the hotel allows a drone.

Can a drone be flown at a Villa d'Este wedding?

Only with exclusive use of the property and the hotel's prior authorisation. I am a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3) and I also check the d-flight map, because seaplanes operate from Como at the south end of the lake. If either answer is no, a boat gives the view from the water instead.

How far is Villa d'Este from Milan's airports?

The hotel gives about 48 minutes from Milan Malpensa (60 km), about an hour from Linate (70 km) and about 1 hour 40 from Bergamo Orio al Serio (100 km). Guests can also arrive by public boat at the Cernobbio pier, five minutes on foot, or by private boat at the hotel's dock.

When is the best light for photos at Villa d'Este?

The hour after the sun drops behind the hills: by my calculation about 7.25 pm in June and 6.45 pm in mid-September, well before sunset. The garden then sits in soft shade while the far shore stays bright. May, June and September give the longest, calmest evenings.
