A wedding at Villa Erba, Cernobbio
Villa Erba hosts symbolic ceremonies and large receptions in a lakeside park at Cernobbio, while the legal ceremony happens at the Comune. Here is what the venue publishes, what it does not, and how I would plan the light.
A Villa Erba wedding is a different kind of Lake Como day: a villa from around 1900 with a flat park on the water, rooms for hundreds, music that can run late, and a private dock for large boats. Weddings are its main business: private events, mostly weddings, made up about 68% of its turnover in 2025, a year with 96 weddings. This guide gathers what Villa Erba and the Comune di Cernobbio publish, checked in October 2026. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker and have not yet worked at Villa Erba, so the photographs here come from my own weddings and sessions elsewhere on Lake Como.
What Villa Erba is
In 1893 the estate passed to Anna Brivio, wife of Luigi Erba, and in 1903 Luigi Erba built the "new villa" to a design by the Milanese architects Savoldi and Borsani. Their daughter Carla married Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, and the best known of her children is the film director Luchino Visconti. The heirs sold in 1986, and in 1988 a congress centre designed by Mario Bellini opened in the park.
Today it is run by Villa Erba SpA, a company mostly in public hands (the Chamber of Commerce of Como-Lecco, Fondazione Fiera Milano, the Provincia di Como and the Comune di Cernobbio among its shareholders). Six first-floor rooms, Le Stanze di Luchino Visconti, can be visited by booking.
Where ceremonies and receptions happen
| Space | Published use and capacity |
|---|---|
| Historic villa, ground floor | The atrium and five rooms seat up to 450 together; dancing for up to 500 |
| Smaller villa rooms | Dinners of around 80 |
| Terraces and lakeside garden | Lunches and dinners outdoors |
| Park | 100,000 m² of flat English garden facing the lake |
| Congress centre pavilion | Up to 1,500 people; gala dinners up to 1,200 seated |
| Former riding hall (Ex-Galoppatoio) | Fitted out with temporary structures |
Villa Erba does not publish ceremony capacities or exclusivity terms. It works with external catering companies and asks every supplier to respect the rules that protect the villa, so ask for the approved list early.
Can you legally marry at Villa Erba?
No. The Comune di Cernobbio's wedding rules, amended on 25 June 2026, allow civil weddings only in the Sala Stemmi of the town hall and at Villa Bernasconi, the Comune's Liberty-style villa museum. A ceremony at Villa Erba is symbolic.
The Comune's slots are Monday to Friday at 10 am, 11.30 am and 1 pm, Saturday at 10 am and 11.30 am, plus Thursday at 3.30 pm and 5 pm; other times until 6 pm cost more, and there are none on Sundays or public holidays. For non-residents the Sala Stemmi costs €500 and Villa Bernasconi €1,200. Apply at least 30 days ahead; my free guide to getting married in Italy explains the papers. A Saturday works well: the legal ceremony at 11.30 am, the symbolic one at Villa Erba in the late afternoon.

Dates to check: the event calendar
Villa Erba is also an exhibition centre, and big events occupy it. In 2026 these included a comic art festival (24 to 26 April), the Proposte trade fair (5 to 7 May), the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este (15 to 17 May), the Lake Sound Park concerts (9 to 26 July) and the Orticolario garden festival (1 to 4 October). Ask for the 2027 calendar before you fall in love with a date.
Getting there: airports, roads and boats
- Airports (the venue's figures): about 45 minutes from Milan Malpensa, 60 minutes from Linate and 20 minutes from Lugano Agno, in Switzerland. Bergamo Orio al Serio is about 95 km by road.
- By road: 1 km from the "Lago di Como" exit of the A9 motorway, with a multi-storey car park for up to 360 cars.
- By train: about 10 minutes from Como San Giovanni station.
- By boat: a private dock for motorboats and boats carrying up to 600 people, so a whole guest list can arrive by water. Cernobbio's public pier is on Navigazione Laghi's Como line.
- By air: a helipad on site.
Music, photo and film rules
Villa Erba stands away from the residential centre, and the venue itself says that music is "guaranteed until late at night" for that reason. For a big party, that is rare on the lake.
It publishes no photography, flash or drone policy, so put the questions in writing: which rooms and parts of the park are open for portraits, at what times, and whether Le Stanze di Luchino Visconti can be included. For a drone, there is also the helipad on site, and seaplanes fly from Como a few kilometres south, so I check the d-flight map and agree any flight with the venue first.
Light: the best time for portraits
The lakefront faces east-southeast, but the land to the west is low and open, so the evening sun reaches the park much later than at Villa d'Este nearby. By my calculation from the terrain, it drops behind the hills at about 7.55 pm in mid-May, 8.15 pm from mid-June to mid-July, 7 pm in mid-September and 6.05 pm in mid-October. Official sunset is about 9.15 pm in June.
That gives a long golden hour on the lawns, with the villa's façade behind you, and then a soft afterglow over the water. I would plan portraits in the park from about an hour before the sun goes, and keep the dock for the blue minutes after.

Rain plan
No rain plan is published, but few venues on the lake have more covered space: the ground floor of the villa seats 450, and the pavilions far more. Lake Como is wetter than Turin in every month, so ask which room is held for you as a backup and when the decision has to be made.
A suggested Villa Erba wedding day (June)
- 11.30 am Civil ceremony at the Sala Stemmi, with close family.
- 2.00 pm Getting ready at your hotel.
- 5.30 pm Symbolic ceremony in the park, facing the lake.
- 6.15 pm Aperitivo on the terraces; family photos.
- 7.15 pm Portraits in the park in low, warm light.
- 8.30 pm Dinner in the historic villa, then dancing late.
- 9.30 pm Five minutes at the dock for the blue hour.
Photographing and filming a Villa Erba wedding: my plan
I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, and work quietly, documentary first. Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we build the timeline around the light, choose photo spots and agree the rain plan, and I work directly with planners.
Villa Erba has two challenges. Distances: from the villa to the lake, the pavilions and your hotel, so the timeline needs walking minutes in it. And scale: with 200 or more guests I would add a second photographer or videographer, so the party is covered while I am outside with the two of you. A late party is good for film, too: the speeches, the first dance and the dance floor are where a highlight film finds its rhythm. See Daniel and Adekunbi's Lake Como wedding and Ali and Zariyat's session.

FAQ
Can you have a legal wedding at Villa Erba?
Not at the villa. The Comune di Cernobbio celebrates civil weddings only in the Sala Stemmi of the town hall and at Villa Bernasconi. Couples can marry legally there, for example the same morning, then hold a symbolic ceremony at Villa Erba. For non-residents the Comune charges €500 for the Sala Stemmi and €1,200 for Villa Bernasconi in standard slots.
How many guests can Villa Erba host?
The ground floor of the historic villa seats up to 450, with dancing for up to 500, and the congress pavilion takes up to 1,500 people, or 1,200 seated for a gala dinner. Smaller rooms suit dinners of around 80. Ceremony capacities in the park are not published, so ask with your numbers.
How much does a Villa Erba wedding cost?
Villa Erba does not publish prices; its events team quotes on request (eventi@villaerba.it). Ask what the hire includes: rooms, park, hours, and which catering companies you can choose. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date, with travel quoted separately; write to me.
Does Villa Erba have rooms for guests?
No, there are no bedrooms on site. The venue works with partner hotels through the Lake Como Convention Bureau, and Villa d'Este and Cernobbio's other hotels are close by. Plan transfers in the timeline, especially for the end of the night.
How late can the music go at Villa Erba?
The venue says music is "guaranteed until late at night" because it stands away from the residential centre. It does not publish a fixed end time, so confirm yours in the contract. A late party also means a later finish for photo and film, which we plan in the hours of your collection.
When is the best light for photos at Villa Erba?
The last hour before the sun goes behind the hills: by my calculation about 8.15 pm in June and 7 pm in mid-September, later than at Villa d'Este because the land to the west is low. The park then glows, and the afterglow over the water follows.
