A Villa Cetinale wedding near Siena

Villa Cetinale is a 17th-century Chigi villa west of Siena, rented privately, with a famous garden, a chapel and a hermitage at the top of a holy stair. It takes weddings of up to 100 guests. Here is what to know before you book.

A Villa Cetinale wedding is a private one: the villa is rented as a whole, with its gardens, its statues and its long view up to the Romitorio on the hill. I have not photographed a wedding at Villa Cetinale, so I will not pretend otherwise. This guide puts together what the villa, the Comune di Sovicille and the Regione Toscana publish, checked in October 2026, with how I plan photo and film for a country villa wedding in Tuscany.

What Villa Cetinale is

In the villa's own history, it was completed by Cardinal Flavio Chigi, who employed Carlo Fontana, "Bernini's famous pupil". The Regione Toscana dates the villa and garden to 1676 to 1688, the Tebaide, the wooded "Thebaid", to 1698 to 1705, and the Romitorio, the hermitage on the hill, to 1716.

The plan is a single straight line. The Romitorio stands at one end, the villa in the middle, and a monumental statue of Hercules at the other end; a holy stair of about 300 stone steps climbs to the hermitage. Around them the villa counts seven votive chapels, 16 full-length statues and 29 busts. Lord Lambton bought the estate in the late 1970s, and today it is available for private rental "for the first time in its history".

Which spaces host ceremonies and receptions

The villa's weddings page is short and clear: "The world-renowned gardens can be used for a blessing and the villa's own chapel, the 17th century chiesa di S. Eustachio can also be used for a more intimate blessing" for about 30 people. Guests are capped at 100, and the villa recommends local planners and suppliers rather than selling a package.

  • The gardens: for the ceremony or blessing; in spring, the villa notes, wisteria covers the walls, with roses, lilies and irises.
  • The chapel of Sant'Eustachio: for a small blessing of about 30.
  • Dinner: the villa lists "a variety of dining locations around the estate", with its own chef and waiters for house guests. Ask which one seats 100 and who caters at that size.
  • Accommodation: 13 bedrooms in the villa (25 guests) and three more houses: La Cerbaia (13), Casa Fabbri (6) and Casa Stella (4).

The rental terms set Friday as changeover day, check-in from 4 pm and check-out by 10 am, with a 30% deposit and a food and drink deposit four weeks before. Prices are not published.

Yes, according to the Comune. By a council decision of December 2016, the Comune di Sovicille allows civil weddings at private sites, and its current list names Villa Cetinale. The fee outside the town hall is €800 for non-residents and €250 for residents and children of residents. Ceremonies are not held at Christmas, New Year, Easter or on 1 May.

One thing to check: the villa's own page speaks only of blessings, so ask both the villa and the Comune which space at Cetinale is authorised for the legal ceremony. The Stato Civile office is on +39 0577 049234 (info@comune.sovicille.si.it). For a Catholic wedding in the chapel, ask your parish and the local diocese early. My free guide to getting married in Italy covers the documents by nationality.

Getting there: airports, Siena and the dirt road

  • From Florence airport: about 90 km, by the villa's figures.
  • From Pisa airport: about 105 km.
  • From Siena: about 20 km by road from the centre (my estimate). Siena's small airport at Ampugnano is 8.5 km away.
  • The last stretch: "Shortly before entering the village of Ancaiano, turn right along a dirt road with signs to CETINALE and CELSA." At the green gates, park on the right and ring the bell marked "Office".

I could not confirm whether coaches can use the dirt road. Ask, and plan minibuses if not. Airport transfers are an optional extra through the villa.

Light and the best portrait spots

By my reading of the map, the line from the villa to the Romitorio runs towards the north-west, and the hill behind the hermitage is wooded. On summer evenings the sun sets roughly behind that hill, so the last direct light may leave the lawn before the official sunset. Around Sovicille the sun sets at about 8.30 pm in mid May, 9 pm in late June and 7.30 pm in mid September.

  • The garden and statues: best in the soft hour after the sun drops behind the trees, with the façade evenly lit.
  • The long axis: a walk away from the camera, the Romitorio far behind; this is the frame the villa is known for.
  • The holy stair: worth the climb for a few frames, and better for photos in the cooler morning.
  • The view south from Casa Fabbri: the villa describes "excellent views to the south towards Monte Amiata".

A suggested Villa Cetinale wedding day

A June Saturday with the whole house rented from Friday.

  1. 2.00 pm Getting ready in the villa: dress, letters, family.
  2. 5.00 pm Civil ceremony or blessing in the gardens.
  3. 5.45 pm Aperitivo on the lawn; family photos, ten minutes, with a list.
  4. 7.00 pm Couple portraits along the axis and among the statues.
  5. 8.00 pm Dinner at the estate's chosen dining spot.
  6. 8.45 pm Ten minutes away from the table for the last light.
  7. 10.00 pm Cake, first dance and party, within the end time the villa agrees.
  8. Sunday morning: a short walk up the holy stair, if anyone is awake.

Rules that affect photo and film

  • Fire season: Tuscany declares a summer fire-risk period, in 2026 from 13 June to 31 August unless extended, when lighting fires outdoors is banned. Ask the Comune before planning fireworks or lanterns.
  • Drones: I am a registered EU drone pilot (ENAC, A1/A3). Siena's aerodrome at Ampugnano is about 6 km away in a straight line, so I check the d-flight map for restricted zones first, and never fly over guests.
  • Music: the villa publishes no end time, and I found no Sovicille rule for private parties. Agree it in writing.
  • Suppliers: the villa recommends local planners and vendors; no exclusive list is published.

Weather plan

The villa does not publish an indoor capacity for 100 guests, and its chapel holds about 30. Ask what happens if it rains: which rooms or covered spaces take the ceremony and dinner, and whether a marquee is allowed and where. In July and August heat is the more likely problem; keep the ceremony after 5 pm and give guests shade and water.

How I would plan photo and film at Villa Cetinale

I shoot photo and film myself, on one timeline, so nobody waits for "the video person". A villa rented for the week gives time: I would walk the gardens with you at the hour of the ceremony, choose where the chairs go by the light, and save the long axis to the Romitorio for the moment after the vows.

Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation where we plan the light, the spots and the rain plan. For typical budgets, see my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy.

FAQ

Can you get legally married at Villa Cetinale?

Yes, according to the Comune di Sovicille, whose list of private wedding sites includes Villa Cetinale. The fee is €800 for non-residents and €250 for residents. The villa's own page speaks of blessings, so ask both the villa and the Comune which space is authorised. No ceremonies at Christmas, New Year, Easter or on 1 May.

How many guests can Villa Cetinale host?

Up to 100: "We allow a maximum of 100 guests," says the villa. The chapel of Sant'Eustachio holds about 30 for a small blessing. The estate sleeps 48, with 25 in the villa itself and the rest in three houses on the property.

How much does a Villa Cetinale wedding cost?

The villa does not publish rental or wedding prices; it quotes on request, with a 30% deposit and a food and drink deposit four weeks before. Add the Comune's €800 civil ceremony fee for non-residents. I send my photo and film collections and prices personally once I know your date; write to me.

How do guests get to Villa Cetinale?

By car from Siena, about 20 km, turning onto a dirt road just before Ancaiano. Florence airport is about 90 km away and Pisa about 105 km. Ask the villa whether coaches can use the dirt road; if not, plan minibuses. Airport transfers can be booked as an extra.

Can we have a church wedding at Villa Cetinale?

The villa offers its 17th-century chapel of Sant'Eustachio for an intimate blessing of about 30. For a Catholic wedding with legal effect, ask your parish and the local diocese whether the chapel can be used, and start early. A blessing in the chapel after the civil ceremony is the simpler route.

When is the best light at Villa Cetinale?

The hour after the sun drops behind the wooded hill in the evening, when the garden and façade are evenly lit, and the early morning for the holy stair. The sun sets around 9 pm in late June and 7.30 pm in mid September. In high summer, keep outdoor moments after 5 pm.
