Getting married in Italy from the UAE: documents by passport, nikah, flights, budget and visas
If you live in the UAE, your passport decides the paperwork for a legal wedding in Italy, not your residence visa. You can marry at an Italian town hall with a nulla osta from your own country, or marry in the UAE and celebrate in Italy. Here is how each route works, with flights, a budget in dirhams and visas for your guests.

Getting married in Italy from the UAE is closer than it looks on a map: direct flights from Dubai to four Italian cities and a time difference of two or three hours. The paperwork needs care, because most people in the UAE hold another country's passport, and Italian law looks at that passport. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Turin, and this guide sorts out the common cases.
Three ways to get married in Italy from the UAE
- A legal civil wedding in Italy. A civil status officer marries you at the town hall or in a room the comune has designated. A nikah can follow the same day.
- Marry legally in the UAE, celebrate in Italy. Sign the papers in the UAE, then hold a symbolic ceremony, a nikah celebration or a dinner in Italy, at any hour your venue allows. In 2025, 65.4% of foreign couples marrying in Italy chose a symbolic ceremony, according to an industry report presented in Rome in February 2026.
- A nikah only. Italian law gives a nikah no civil effect on its own, so pair it with route 1 or 2 if you want to be legally married. My guide to the nikah in Italy covers the imam, halal catering and prayer space.
Your documents depend on your passport, not your residence visa
Italy's Ministry of Justice is clear: capacity to marry is governed by the national law of each spouse (article 27 of Law 218/1995), and a foreigner marrying in Italy presents a declaration from the competent authority of their own country, the nulla osta (article 116 of the Civil Code). For most UAE residents, that means your own embassy. The full Italian process is in my guide to civil weddings in Italy for foreigners; here are the common cases.
Emirati citizens
I could not find an official UAE or Italian page explaining how an Emirati citizen obtains a nulla osta for Italy, so ask the UAE Embassy in Rome and your comune before you book anything. The UAE's own rules still apply: its government portal says Emirati men in the armed forces, the police or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs need their employer's permission to marry an expatriate, and an Emirati woman marrying an expatriate needs her guardian's consent.
British citizens living in the UAE
For British nationals who live outside the UK, GOV.UK's route is a certificate of no impediment (the Italian nulla osta) from the British Embassy in Rome. You must be in Italy for three whole days before you sign the notice and affirmation in front of an Italian notary (a hotel booking counts as proof), then post the papers to Rome, where the notice is displayed for seven days before the certificate is issued. Plan a longer stay or two trips; my guide for UK couples has the details.
Indian citizens living in the UAE
The Consulate General of India in Milan states that no law authorises consular officers to issue a "No Objection Certificate" or a "Bachelorhood Certificate", and that anyone who needs such a declaration may have to obtain a declaratory decree from a competent court in India. See my guide to getting married in Italy from India.
Other nationalities
Ask your own embassy in Rome for its nulla osta procedure in writing and send it to your comune for approval. A nulla osta issued by a consulate in Italy usually has to be legalised at the prefettura; home documents need an apostille or legalisation and a sworn Italian translation.

Documents issued in the UAE
For a document from a UAE authority, such as a divorce judgment from a UAE court, the Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi sets the chain: legalisation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translation, then legalisation by the Embassy, booked through Prenot@Mi. An Arabic document first goes into English with a translator recognised by the UAE Ministry of Justice, then through both ministries' attestations and an Italian translation.
Marrying legally in the UAE first
Abu Dhabi civil marriage. The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department offers civil marriage to couples of any religion or nationality, except Muslim citizens of the UAE. Residence is not required, but non-residents must attend the ceremony in Abu Dhabi (residents can join by video link). The fee is AED 300 (up to 10 working days) or AED 2,500 for the urgent service (one working day). For use abroad, the certificate is attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs; ask your home embassy what it needs.
Dubai. Dubai Courts also marry non-Muslims, if at least one of you lives in Dubai and both are at least 21.
A Muslim marriage. Under the UAE's personal status law in force since 15 April 2025, Islamic marriages are conducted by the courts or by authorised marriage officials (mazoons), and premarital medical screening is mandatory for Muslim couples.
Flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Emirates serves four Italian gateways from Dubai: in its own July 2025 figures, two daily flights to Milan, three to Rome, one to Venice and a daily Bologna service; its Dubai to Bologna timetable works out at roughly seven hours. Milan is the gateway for Turin, Piedmont and the lakes, Venice for the Veneto, Bologna for Emilia-Romagna and one way into Tuscany, Rome for central and southern Italy. Frequencies change by season, so check current schedules before you set the date.

Time difference: easy planning from Dubai and Abu Dhabi
The UAE is 4 hours ahead of GMT all year. Italy is on UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, so the UAE is 2 hours ahead of Italy in summer and 3 in winter: a 10 am call in Turin in June is noon in Dubai. Calls fit a working day in both countries, and a site visit over a weekend is realistic.

Budget in dirhams and euros
Euro figures come from the sources below, converted at €1 = AED 4.1224: the European Central Bank's euro to dollar rate of 2 October 2026 (1.1225) times the dirham's fixed 3.6725 per dollar. Recheck before signing anything priced in euros.
| Item | Euros | Dirhams |
|---|---|---|
| Average spend per wedding of a foreign couple in Italy, 2025 | €67,000 | about AED 276,200 |
| Average wedding of an Italian couple, 2025 (97.5 guests) | €25,970 | about AED 107,060 |
| Civil ceremony in Turin, neither partner resident | €352 | about AED 1,450 |
| Historic room for the ceremony in Turin | €800 or €2,000 | about AED 3,300 or AED 8,245 |
| Schengen visa fee, per adult guest who needs one | €90 | about AED 370 |
| My photo and film collections, 6, 8 or 12 hours | quoted personally |
The venue, rooms and food will dwarf every other line; if you need halal catering or an alcohol-free reception, ask venues to price it that way from the first quote, not as a change later. I send my collections and prices personally once I know your date and venue, with my travel and accommodation added to the quote line by line, and what a wedding photographer costs in Italy shows what the market charges.
Visas for your guests: it depends on the passport
- Emirati citizens are on the EU's list of nationalities exempt from the visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- Other visa-free passports (British, American, Australian and others) follow the same 90-day rule; EU citizens need only a valid passport or identity card. ETIAS, the EU's €20 travel authorisation for visa-free visitors, is not in operation yet: no start date had been announced by October 2026, and the EU says it will give several months' notice.
- Guests who need a visa apply in the country where they legally live, no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before the trip. The fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12; decisions normally take 15 days, sometimes up to 45. Holders of an Abu Dhabi residence visa apply through BLS International; residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates go through the Consulate General in Dubai and VFS Global. Check the Consulate's notices first: in March 2026 it suspended visa services because of instability in the Gulf region, then resumed them gradually at its usual centre.
Passports must be valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen area and issued within the last ten years. Give guests who need a visa a letter with the date and venue.
Where to marry: regions for big and small weddings
The same report names the UAE among the long-haul markets sending encouraging signals, but I found no data on where couples from the UAE marry in Italy. With four Emirates gateways, choose by the shape of your day and the airport closest to it.
- A large wedding with family privacy: a villa or estate for exclusive use, with rooms on site, a kitchen that can work with a halal caterer and a quiet room for prayer, in Tuscany, the Langhe hills or on Lake Como.
- A civil ceremony and a dinner in the city: in Turin you can marry in historic rooms such as Palazzo Madama, take portraits at the Reggia di Venaria, about 10 km from the city centre, and hold a nikah or a dinner at your venue in the evening.
- A small wedding: a town hall, a lunch and a walk by the lake, with the portraits saved for the softer light after 7 pm in summer rather than the midday sun.

A checklist for couples in the UAE
- 12 months before: choose your route and region; ask the comune for its document list for each of your nationalities.
- 9 to 12 months: book the venue, then your photographer and filmmaker; ask your embassies in Rome how they issue the nulla osta.
- 6 months: order fresh documents, start UAE attestations, send visa letters to guests who need them.
- 3 months: book a sworn translator and an interpreter; send copies to the comune for checking.
- The week before: arrive (earlier for the British route), legalise consular documents at the prefettura, make the declaration of intention to marry with your witnesses.
- After: collect multilingual extracts of the marriage certificate and register the marriage at home if required.
How I help couples planning from the UAE
I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, so even a large family day has one person with a camera to brief and one person's travel on the quote. I speak English, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Azerbaijani: Italian for the comune and the venue, English or another shared language with your guests.
At a nikah I work by simple rules: no flash during the ceremony, shoes off in the prayer space, and no photos of people praying unless you ask for them. If parts of the day are for women only, we agree in advance what I photograph and when I step out.
I reply personally within a day or two, and a free 20-minute video call can follow. Every collection includes a pre-wedding consultation: the timeline around the light, photo spots and a rain plan. I work directly with planners. See whole days on my work page, including a town hall ceremony followed by an afternoon at the Reggia di Venaria, or start with my free planning guide.
FAQ
Can UAE residents get married in Italy?
Yes. The comune looks at your citizenship, not your residence. Each foreign partner brings a nulla osta from their own country, plus supporting documents with an apostille or legalisation and an Italian translation. Documents issued in the UAE need legalisation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a translation and legalisation by the Italian Embassy or Consulate.
Is a nikah in Italy legally valid?
Not on its own. Italy gives civil effect to religious marriages only in specific cases, and no Islamic organisation has the agreement with the state that would cover a nikah. Couples add a civil ceremony in Italy, or marry legally in the UAE first and hold the nikah or the celebration in Italy.
Can we marry in Abu Dhabi and celebrate in Italy?
Yes. Abu Dhabi's civil marriage is open to couples of any religion or nationality except Muslim UAE citizens, and you do not need to live in the UAE. The standard fee is AED 300. Have the certificate attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, check what your embassy needs, then plan a symbolic ceremony in Italy with no paperwork.
Do Emirati guests need a visa for Italy?
No. Emirati citizens are on the EU's list of nationalities exempt from the Schengen visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Their passports must be valid for at least three months after they leave. When ETIAS starts, visa-free visitors will need that €20 online authorisation; it is not in operation yet, and no start date had been announced by October 2026.
Where do UAE residents apply for an Italian visa?
Where they legally live, so in the UAE. According to the Italian Embassy, holders of an Abu Dhabi residence visa apply through BLS International, and residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates through the Consulate General in Dubai and VFS Global. Apply up to six months and at least 15 days before travel.
How long is the flight from Dubai to Italy?
Emirates' own timetable for Dubai to Bologna leaves at 9:20 am and lands at 2:40 pm local time, about seven hours and twenty minutes gate to gate. It also flies from Dubai to Milan, Rome and Venice; check each schedule for your dates. Milan is the gateway for Turin, Piedmont and the lakes.
Can you photograph a women-only part of the day?
We plan it together. Some families want those moments photographed by a woman, some want no photos at all, and some are happy for me to cover them. We agree it in the consultation, and on the day I follow it, along with my nikah rules.
Planning from the UAE?
Tell me your date, your venue or shortlist, and which passports the two of you hold, because that decides the paperwork. I will reply personally within a day or two with my availability. Send me your date and venue.
