Getting married in Italy from Nigeria: legal options, documents, guest visas, flights and budget
Nigerian couples can marry legally at an Italian town hall, or marry at a Federal Marriage Registry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Italy. Here is what the official sources confirm, what you must check with the Nigerian Embassy in Rome, and how to plan visas, flights and a budget in naira.

Getting married in Italy from Nigeria takes more lead time than the wedding itself suggests. The documents need legalisation in Nigeria and again by the Italian missions, and most of your guests will need Schengen visas. The good news: there is almost no time difference, so planning from Lagos or Abuja feels close. I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Turin, and below I separate what official sources confirm from what you must check yourselves.
Two ways to get married in Italy from Nigeria
- A legal civil wedding in Italy. A civil status officer of the comune marries you at the town hall or in a room the comune has designated, with two witnesses and an interpreter if you need one.
- A registry wedding in Nigeria, then a celebration in Italy. You marry under the Marriage Act at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Italy, led by a celebrant, at any hour and in any place your venue allows.
Route 2 is the simpler one on paper. Across all foreign couples, 65.4% chose a symbolic ceremony in Italy in 2025, according to an industry report presented in Rome in February 2026.
A legal wedding in Italy: what is confirmed, and what to ask
The Italian rule. Italy's Ministry of Justice explains that capacity to marry is governed by each spouse's national law, and that a foreigner marrying in Italy must present a declaration from the competent authority of their own country that nothing prevents the marriage: the nulla osta (article 116 of the Civil Code). Turin, for example, asks for a nulla osta issued by your consulate or embassy in Italy, legalised at the Prefettura.
What I could not confirm. The consular page of the Embassy of Nigeria in Rome lists passports and visas, and nothing about a nulla osta, a certificate of no impediment or a single-status certificate. Write to the Embassy, ask whether and how it issues a nulla osta for marriage, the documents and the fee, and get the answer in writing.
A related Nigerian document. Nigeria's Ministry of Interior issues an attestation of bachelorhood or spinsterhood for Nigerians who want to marry in the foreign country where they live; the applicant presents an affidavit from the High Court proving they are single. Whether an Italian comune accepts it in place of an Embassy nulla osta is for the comune to decide, so send it a copy before you rely on it.
Legalising Nigerian documents. Nigeria has not joined the Apostille Convention. Documents such as a birth certificate or an affidavit are first authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, then legalised by the Italian Embassy in Abuja (for the FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau and Katsina) or the Consulate General in Lagos (all other states), with an Italian translation. You book by email, the fee is set at the appointment, and the Consulate in Lagos lists 60 days as its ordinary term. Start four to six months before the wedding.
At the comune. Once the documents are accepted, the rest is short: without banns for couples who do not live in Italy, you make your declaration of intention at the town hall a few days before the ceremony, with an interpreter if needed. My guide to civil weddings in Italy for foreigners covers this step by step.

Marrying at a Federal Marriage Registry first
The Ministry of Interior conducts statutory marriages under the Marriage Act at Federal Marriage Registries across Nigeria, and the Minister of Interior said in 2021 that the Ministry's Form E is the only valid, legally recognised certificate of marriage. The Ministry's marriage portal listed the application fee at ₦75,000 for an ordinary marriage and ₦100,000 for a special marriage when I checked in October 2026. The Ministry's earlier published guidance (2019 to 2021) gave a waiting time of 21 days for an ordinary marriage and 7 days for a special one, and asked each partner for a birth certificate or declaration of age, a passport photograph, a sworn affidavit of bachelorhood or spinsterhood from a court, and one witness each on the day. Check the current rules with the registry.
Once you are married at home, the day in Italy needs no paperwork. If your families are also planning a traditional ceremony in Nigeria, decide early which comes first, because many guests may want to travel to both.
Flights to Italy
I could not confirm any direct scheduled flight between Nigeria and Italy for 2026, so plan on one connection. Ethiopian Airlines' network includes Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Enugu as well as Rome and Milan, connecting through Addis Ababa. Compare other one-stop routes on the airlines' own sites, and choose the arrival airport by region: Milan for Turin, Piedmont and the lakes, Rome for central and southern Italy.

Time difference: almost none
Nigeria keeps West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. Italy is on UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. From November to March, Lagos and Turin show the same time; in the wedding season, Italy is one hour ahead, so a 10 am call in Turin in June is 9 am in Abuja. Calls with venues, the comune and me happen in office hours on both sides. For the season and sunset times, see the best time to get married in Italy.
Budget in naira and euros
Euro figures come from the sources below, converted at the Central Bank of Nigeria's central rate for the euro on 2 October 2026: €1 = ₦1,496.19. The naira moves, so recheck before you sign anything priced in euros.
| Item | Euros | Naira |
|---|---|---|
| Average spend per wedding of a foreign couple in Italy, 2025 | €67,000 | about ₦100.2 million |
| Average wedding of an Italian couple, 2025 (97.5 guests) | €25,970 | about ₦38.9 million |
| Civil ceremony in Turin, neither partner resident | €352 | about ₦526,700 |
| Historic room for the ceremony in Turin | €800 or €2,000 | about ₦1.2 million or ₦3 million |
| Schengen visa fee, per adult guest | €90 | about ₦134,700 |
| My photo and film collections, 6, 8 or 12 hours | quoted personally |
Venue and catering are the largest lines, so ask venues for a per-guest price early; my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy shows what the market charges for photography. The Consulate charges the visa fee in naira at its own quarterly consular rate, which can differ from the figure above. I send my own collections and prices personally once I know your date and venue, with my travel and accommodation added to the quote line by line.
Schengen visas for your guests
Nigerian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for Italy, so for most guests the visa is the longest lead time in the plan. According to the Italian Embassy in Abuja, applications are handled by the Consulate General in Lagos and submitted through TLScontact, which has offices in Lagos and Abuja and works by appointment only. Under EU rules, guests apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before the trip; the fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and decisions take 15 days, sometimes up to 45.
The Consulate's tourism checklist includes a round-trip flight reservation, proof of accommodation, an invitation letter where necessary, health insurance with at least €30,000 of cover, a letter from the employer confirming leave, proof of ties to Nigeria and three months of bank statements. Passports must be valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen area and issued within the last ten years.
What helps a guest list:
- Send the date early: save-the-dates 9 to 12 months ahead, formal invitations when the six-month window opens.
- One letter per guest with your names, the date, the venue's address and the schedule, plus a hotel booking in their name.
- Book rooms in blocks with a hotel that confirms each booking in writing.
- Book appointments as soon as the window opens, not in the final weeks.

Where to marry: regions for big and small weddings
I found no data on where Nigerian couples marry in Italy. What I would weigh first is the visa file: every guest who applies for a visa needs proof of accommodation, so a venue with enough rooms on site or close by, booked through a hotel that confirms each reservation in writing, makes the applications easier.
- A large wedding: a villa or estate you can book for exclusive use, with space for a long dinner, a dance floor and rooms nearby. Ask what time the music must stop, in writing.
- Easy travel for guests: with one connection on the way, a venue within reach of a big airport saves a second long day. Turin, Piedmont and the lakes are close to the Milan and Turin airports, central Italy to Rome.
- A small wedding: a town hall ceremony, a lunch and an evening walk by the lake, which also keeps the number of visa applications small.
A checklist for Nigerian couples
- 12 months before: choose your route and region; write to the Nigerian Embassy in Rome and to the comune about the nulla osta.
- 9 to 12 months: book the venue, then your photographer and filmmaker; send save-the-dates.
- 6 months: order birth certificates and court affidavits; start Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and book the Italian legalisation; send visa letters to guests.
- 3 months: book a sworn translator and an interpreter; send copies to the comune for checking.
- The week before: arrive in Italy, legalise any consular nulla osta at the prefettura, make your declaration at the comune with your witnesses.
- After: collect multilingual extracts of the marriage certificate and ask the Embassy how to register the marriage in Nigeria.
How I help
I photograph and film the day myself, on one timeline, so a big celebration still has one person to brief and one person's travel on the quote. I speak English, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Azerbaijani, so I handle the Italian side with the comune and the venue, and talk with your families in English on the day.
Visas decide who can travel, and some relatives may watch the wedding only on screen. My photo and film collections all include a film: up to 3 minutes in Essential, up to 10 minutes with a highlight reel and vertical reels for phones in Premium, and up to 20 minutes in 4K in Signature. In the pre-wedding consultation, included in every collection, we build the timeline around the light, list the family groups you want photographed, choose photo spots and plan for rain. For a large guest list I can add a second photographer or videographer.

With no time difference in winter and one hour in summer, a free 20-minute video call fits your working day; I reply personally to every enquiry within a day or two. Full galleries are on my work page, from a lakeside wedding in Bellagio to a town hall ceremony and an afternoon at the Reggia di Venaria near Turin, and my free planning guide covers the logistics of planning from abroad.
FAQ
Can Nigerians get legally married in Italy?
Yes, under the general Italian rule: each foreign partner presents a nulla osta from their own country's authorities, with supporting documents legalised and translated into Italian. The Nigerian Embassy in Rome does not publish its procedure, so ask it in writing how it issues the nulla osta, and ask your comune exactly which documents it will accept.
Do Nigerian documents need an apostille for Italy?
No, because Nigeria has not joined the Apostille Convention. They need full legalisation instead: authentication by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalisation by the Italian Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos, depending on your state, with an Italian translation. The Lagos Consulate lists 60 days as its ordinary term.
Is a marriage at a Federal Marriage Registry enough?
For the legal side, it can be: you marry under the Marriage Act at home, receive the Form E certificate, and the day in Italy becomes a symbolic ceremony with no Italian paperwork. Ask your registry about current waiting times and documents. A symbolic ceremony is also the most common choice in Italy: 65.4% of foreign couples held one in 2025.
How early should our guests apply for visas?
As early as the rules allow: applications open six months before the trip and close 15 days before it. In Nigeria they go through TLScontact in Lagos or Abuja, by appointment only. Send each guest a letter with your names, the date and the venue, and a hotel booking in their name, as soon as their window opens.
Are there direct flights from Lagos to Italy?
I could not confirm a direct scheduled flight for 2026. Plan on one connection: Ethiopian Airlines, for example, links Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Enugu with Rome and Milan through Addis Ababa. Milan is the right airport for Turin, Piedmont and the lakes; Rome for central and southern Italy.
How much does a wedding in Italy cost in naira?
Foreign couples spent about €67,000 per wedding in Italy in 2025, about ₦100 million at the Central Bank of Nigeria's rate of 2 October 2026. Italian couples spent €25,970 on average, about ₦38.9 million. Venue, rooms and catering take the largest share. For my photography and film, I send a personal quote once I know your date and venue, with travel listed separately.
Do we need to speak Italian?
No. If you or your witnesses do not understand Italian, an interpreter must be present at the civil ceremony; in Turin you nominate the interpreter yourselves. For a symbolic ceremony, the celebrant can speak English. I work in English, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Azerbaijani.
Planning from Nigeria?
Tell me your date, your venue or shortlist, and roughly how many guests will travel from Nigeria, so we can plan the day around the people who can be there. I will reply personally within a day or two with my availability. Send me your date and venue.
